Living Room Seating

Happy Week of Thanksgiving, everyone!  I am so excited for this week and also for Friday because I will be putting up Christmas!  Rocking out to Christmas music in my jammies, trimming the tree, ignoring the Black Friday craziness.  This will be a special Christmas for us as it is the first Christmas in our first home.  So this week will be full of decorating, zhushing, and festiveness.

I relocated our ghost chairs from the kitchen and got some awesome new chairs for such a steal for that room, which I will show you later this week!  I put one ghost chair in the office, and one in the living room.  I love the additional seating — it’s very convenient!  Especially since the sofa is a slipcover that is lovely but gets messed up easily, so if I’m the only one home, this gives me another place to sit without disturbing the sofa.  😉  I’l probably get over that, but for now I just love when it looks relaxed but not too relaxed, ha!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.20.37 PM

The table was on clearance from HomeGoods and I just couldn’t say no.  At this point we are done buying furniture for the house…we will be waiting for Christmas.  The living room is more or less put together at this point but there are a few things that I want in order to complete it.  All in good time.  🙂

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.22.44 PM

I love orchids.  I think they are my absolute favorite kind of plant that there is.  Trader Joe’s has them for a really inexpensive price and they are usually all very healthy-looking.  My father-in-law is a plant guy and he says he always gets his orchids from there.  The top of this table is marble and so is the coaster, so that works!  The candle is just a simple Glade Apple Cinnamon candle.  Smells so good!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.23.24 PM

Since we moved in right in the middle of the Fall season, I really haven’t done any Fall decorating.  That little pumpkin sits in the corner and it’s so cute.  There’s a face on the other side but I like it plain!  I think it is from Jim Shore?  My mom-in-law gave it to me when she was clearing out some Fall decorations.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.24.06 PM

Other little Fall touches include a bowl of acorns lovingly plucked from New Jersey by my Aunt Lulu and a faux fur blanket from Restoration Hardware that was a Christmas gift a few years ago — so cozy!

One more view of this new little spot.  🙂

Have a great Monday, everyone!

Plants In Baskets

It’s almost Friday — and almost Thanksgiving!  🙂  I’m so excited, as there is so much to look forward to, and I am in full-on nesting mode and having a blast.  I was perusing the clearance aisles of HomeGoods the other day and found a large basket on super discount — it was only $12.  I knew just what I was going to do with it!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 11.47.30 AM

I love that the basket is dark and adds a new texture to the room.  You really can’t have enough baskets, people.  Corralling dog toys, shoes!, odds and ends, receipts, napkins… I can think of about a million ways to use baskets, and I bet you can, too.  But this was a new way to use a basket for me — and I love it!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 11.48.06 AM

The poinsettia adds that touch of red that I was told every room needs when I was in design school.  😉 I’m not sure how long these are supposed to live, but I hope it lasts through the season.  I’ve been good about watering it, but not over-watering it, so we will see.

This got me thinking about baskets and plants as a pair… I see this everywhere — Pinterest, design magazines, catalogs…  And I see it in different styles.  Ultra modern aesthetics usually use a more saggy or casual basket, and with traditional vignettes, I see a lot of structured baskets.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t break the rules!  Do it — I dare you!

Our New Adventure

When I started this blog about two and a half years ago, we had just moved into my in-laws’ house in order to save money for our own home.  We didn’t think it was going to take as long as it did to accomplish our goal, but guys…we bought a house, and we moved in over the weekend.  It is truly a dream come true and it happened so fast — we went out one day to look at one house, and it ended up being The One.

We moved in on our five-year wedding anniversary, which was such a gift that we both could share.  My husband already did a bunch of home improvement projects and I zhushed — it was pure bliss.  😉  With a little stress, of course.  But mostly bliss.

Together as a couple, we truly found our faith over the past several months and created a strong bond with our God, and we are all the better for it.  It was an amazing experience to go through as a couple and I am so, so thankful.

SO, we’ve got a ton of fun little projects to do and things to get (all eventually), but I thought I’d show you just a little bit of the house today.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 10.54.18 AM

My mom brought us that pretty poinsettia on the day we started moving things over.  I love it!

The entertainment center is from Ikea.  Lots of great storage — I’ve got some candle sticks and vases in the bottom drawer.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 11.36.32 AM

The slip cover for the sofa is from Sure Fit and I highly recommend it if you want to cover a sofa and not buy a new one.  We got the look we wanted for just a little more than $100.  The pillows are from HomeGoods, of course.  😉

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 11.37.10 AM

I changed up my little vignette that I wrote about on the blog a few months ago — layering a lucite tray with my DIY marble tray.  A silver bowl holds my favorite rocks and the seashell that Grey collected for me on our beach trip back in June.  And aren’t those coasters cool?!  Marble with an agate center — HomeGoods for $7.99.  I couldn’t believe it!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 11.37.46 AM

The kitchen is a work in progress much like everything else, but I love it.  We hung the chandelier that we bought from Ikea and I’m expecting four chairs next week – I got them for a great deal and need extra seating so I can actually have people over for dinner.  😉

I hope you’re having a great Tuesday!  I’m off to work and then I have a feeling I will be spending my evening sorting through the garage, ha!

Sweet Salvage: French Market

Good morning to you!  The weather has perfectly turned here in sunny Scottsdale and the mornings are chilly and crisp, the afternoons breezy and cool.  I am in heaven!  I hope you are enjoying a bit of Fall wherever you may be.

A couple of weekends ago, I had the pleasure of attending another one of Sweet Salvage’s shows.  I wrote about the Wicked Faire that we went to in celebration of the Halloween holiday and after that, I was hooked.  Just a reminder: Sweet Salvage is a four-day vintage show that runs through a Thursday-Sunday period each month — that’s it!  The displays are amazing, the collections are incredible, and it truly is an absolutely magical place.  If you are traveling in Arizona and you love the thrill of the hunt, you really have to go — it is unlike any other experience.

Last month was their French Market, and in a word, it was lovely.  Much more understated than their Wicked Faire that was truly wild, this show was filled with vintage dishes and serving pieces, plenty of silver (yes, I came home with some!), and greenery, of course.  It was beautiful, and I am so excited to share my photos with you.  There is so much inspiration to be had here even in our own vignette-ing that we do around our homes.

I LOVED these zinc pots.  Wouldn’t these be great with topiaries or even a little rosemary Christmas tree?

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 10.43.20 AM

There were plenty of French-inspired chandeliers all around.  Hanging, sitting and looking pretty — they were everywhere.

Gorgeous candle snuffers — aren’t they so cool?  Very mid-century modern.  If one of these are *somehow* still at the next show, I think I will take one home with me.  😉

I don’t know if I showed you the Warehouse last time I posted about Sweet Salvage!  This is another huge building on the property and it has, I guess, what can only be described as the more “manly” antiques.  Greyson’s favorite shopping experience is this one.  🙂

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 10.48.38 AM

While shopping, you are welcomed to complementary water, coffee, etc. and for a number of hours each day, there are different food trucks servicing the store.  It really is a one-of-a-kind shopping experience on so many levels.

This month is their Comfort and Joy show, and I am SO looking forward to seeing what they have in store for Christmas!  🙂

Have a wonderful day!

Halloween Decor…All the Rest

Happy November 1st, everyone!  🙂  I hope you all had a fun and spooky Halloween.  Ours was great and although we are bummed to see another one go, we are so looking forward to the beginning of the ‘Holiday’ season.  I’ve seen some Christmas-y commercials and no, I don’t think it’s too early!  I’m loving it!  😉

But before we jump into full-on Fall mode, I thought I would take some time today to share the rest of our Halloween decor.  This was an epic year for it, and it seemed like every time my mom-in-law went to Target, she came back with something else that was awesome.  🙂  Here’s my Halloween House Tour…

These ‘Hocus Pocus’ pillows are from the Target Dollar Spot.  I bought a pair as well so I’m looking forward to using them next year!

I love this pretty potion display.  🙂  The printables can be found here.  My mom-in-law just has a ton of these vessels laying around and she put them to good use!  And the werewolf fur…well, let’s just say that our pup sheds A LOT.  😉

This is the spooky centerpiece in the dining room.  The skulls and tombstone are from Target, of course.  They were killing it with Halloween decor this year!  Moss…a hot decorating commodity in this house.  Can’t have enough of that stuff!

And then just some ‘around the house’ details… pumpkins on the kitchen island…

And, of course, a Halloween pie for good measure.

Thanks so much for following along this Halloween season with our fun decor!  Have a wonderful day!

Halloweenie Mantel

Hopefully you are gearing up for a fun, festive weekend celebrating this spooky holiday.  🙂  I always have loved Halloween for some non-traditional reasons…  My mom always makes the same simple meal ‘sopa’ soup and hot dogs, and we pass out candy to the many kiddos.  Then my dad and I watch whatever cheesy horror movies are on TV after eight o’clock.  There’s also the element of freshness that arrives the following morning, November 1st, when the promise of Thanksgiving and Christmas is dwindling in the air.  So Halloween is sort of the kick-off to a couple of months of so much cozy family time.

I have so much to show you still, and I am running out of time!  On Monday I hope to continue the Halloween tour and just post all the rest…  😉

But today’s post is about my favorite room and the mantel that I love.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.30.51 AM

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.31.23 AM

Implementing the decor that is usually on this mantel, my mom-in-law just added a few more details to make this spot extra festive.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.31.58 AM

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.32.28 AM

We’ve got pumpkins on candle sticks and all.the.feathers.  There’s no shortage of feathers in this house.  😉

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.33.05 AM

This little cage is completely multi-purpose and makes a great perch for a crow.  I have seen this cage used a variety of ways and during different seasons.  Shop your house for items that will work in your vignettes before you go to a store!  That’s one of the biggest rules to decorating on a budget.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.33.49 AM

Pretty little details, even in a spooky scene.

I hope you have a perfectly ghostly weekend.  I will see you back here Monday with ALL the decor!

A Hogwarts Display

Good morning and welcome to the Monday before Halloween.  🙂  Do you have your candy ready for the trick-or-treaters?  Have you made any fun and spooky sweets yet?  I’m hoping I’ll have time to make a little something later this week or over the weekend.

I’m continuing my Halloween tour today and we’re heading into the room off the foyer to see a fun little display that reminds me of my favorite magical place…Hogwarts.  🙂  Grey and I took a trip to Harry Potter World over the summer and this vignette really makes me think of the walk through Hogwarts that is long and meandering that you take before you go on the big Quidditch ride.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.25.01 AM

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.25.34 AM

The tray is actually a stone Lazy Susan, so this display can be turned on a whim.  I love the candle sticks — they remind me so much of Slytherin house.  The tombstone is from the Target Dollar Spot and is a heavy concrete material, which was an exciting find — no styrofoam here!  The labels are printables and can be found here.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.26.08 AM

Inside of the huge glass jar is just a bunch of black tulle and a skeleton hand.  🙂  Dark-covered vintage books and a feather complete the display.  Feathers are to Halloween as sand is to summer when it comes to decorating tools around here — you just can never have enough!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.26.43 AM

I hope you have a great start to your week!

Skeleton Foyer

We’re a little more than a week away from Halloween and I am behind in sharing all of our fun decor!  🙂  There’s so much to see, and so far I have only posted about the entry.  Today we’re taking a peek at the other side of the foyer, since I shared a few weeks ago (agh!) about the other half, right when entering from the front door.

I’m excited to say that for the past month and a half, this has been the funny view for visitors…

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.18.31 AM

I love that it’s pretty, because obviously the decor and finishes are beautiful, BUT it’s just the right amount of spooky.  🙂  Beautiful and festive…that’s my favorite combination.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.19.05 AM

This is our skeleton collection, and I’m pretty proud of it.  Mister Bones, his dog, and maybe the skull of his late wife?  Who knows!  These guys are not the expensive ones from Frontgate… I think they’re from Target.  But all of the limbs move, his mouth opens and shuts, and the best part is that he is posable.  At least  I think that’s the best part — it makes for some good laughs!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.19.39 AM

I think this little pillow is so cute.  It used to live outside and is a little faded, but the muted color works nicely with the more neutral tones in this room.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.20.16 AM

A fun table vignette anchors this spooky display.  Curly willow is an instant Halloween element!  Use what you have.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.20.59 AM

This is how our skeleton looks these days.  This is my husband’s doing…he’s got the best kind of sense of humor.  😉  No eyes, no need for glasses, and no reason for a winter hat, but at least Mister Bones is ready for the next season (although, don’t tell him, but he will be packed away in a box by then!).

Happy Friday to you!  I hope you have the best weekend.  We will be going to another Sweet Salvage market and I can’t wait!

Trick-Or-Halloween-Treats

Halloween really is a time for simple, festive treats.  I’m not about the overly-gross variety — for me it’s all about the cute!  😉  Use Fall flavors, seasonal candies (hello candy corn!), and spooky shapes for your Halloween treat-making.  Here is a little bit of spooky inspiration.  Have a great day!

Halloween In the Foyer

Hi, everyone!  Happy First Week of October!  🙂  I’ve been so excited for the month to start because Halloween decorations have been up in the house since the beginning of September, but I thought I would wait to share so that the mood was a little more festive.  Now that we’ve reached October, the time has come, and I have so many fun vignettes to show you!

The foyer is pretty large, so I’m breaking it up into two posts.  The outside of the house has a few little Halloween touches that I love, too.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 11.59.48 PM

That spider is big and he’s furry!  Sometimes he spooks me when I go outside at night.  😉

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.00.26 AM

This is just a store-bought sign with a bit of zhushing.  It was up on the door last year, and has been decked out with black tulle and ribbon.  It’s a fun little Halloween welcome for guests, and the UPS delivery guy.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.00.59 AM

The foyer is long and on the narrow side, so the decorations live on the perimeter.  I LOVE this idea that my mom-in-law came up with.  The silver tray is one that we use all over the house for both holiday and year-round decorating, and its been elevated on an iron stand that complements the iron doors so well.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.01.32 AM

You can see here that it’s got some height!  Compared to the other decor in this corner, it’s really nice in size.  The gourds are huge!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.02.07 AM

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.02.34 AM

The pumpkins and gourds are all from Trader Joe’s.  They have been rubbed with a bleach solution since we read online that that helps un-carved pumpkins from rotting quickly.  The antlers were a fun Sweet Salvage find, and I wrote about our experience there a couple of weeks ago!  Adding in a few sprigs of leaves and some berries gives the whole vignette a nice, filled-out look.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.03.07 AM

These moss planters are here year-round (there’s another one on the other side of the bench), but I like that little velvety spider.  He’s startled me a couple of times, too!  Can you tell yet that I am sort of afraid of spiders?

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.03.39 AM

Here’s the full view looking toward the front door.  🙂  It’s just such a happy room, with so much natural light and so pretty.  The other side of the room is really fun, and I can’t wait to show you!

I hope you’re all having a great Monday!
