The Globe Chair

There are a great many furniture pieces that stick out for me as favorites during the industrial design era, but I think that the Globe Chair (or, the Ball Chair) by Eero Aarnio is my most favorite.

In Aarnio’s own words:

“The idea of the chair was very obvious. We had moved to our first home and I had started my free-lance career in 1962.

We had a home but no proper big chair, so I decided to make one, but some way a really new one. After some drawing I noticed that the shape of the chair had become so simple that it was merely a ball. I pinned the full scale drawing on the wall and sat in the chair to see how my head would move when sitting inside it. Being the taller one of us I sat in the chair and my wife drew the course of my head on the wall. This is how I determined the height of the chair. Since I aimed at a ball shape, the other lines were easy to draw, just remembering that the chair would have to fit through a doorway.

After this I made the first prototype myself using an inside mould, which has been made using the same principle as a glider fuselage or wing. I covered the plywood body mould with wet paper and laminated the surface with fiberglass, rubbed down the outside, removed the mould from inside, had it upholstered and added the leg. In the end I installed the red telephone on the inside wall of the chair. The naming part of the chair was easy, the BALL CHAIR was born.”

And what an iconic birth it was!

It appears that pups love to lounge in these chairs, too!  Big dogs or little dogs — these chairs are equal opportunity.  🙂

How’s this for a more traditional application?  Pretty awesome juxtaposition.

Lucite Entry Tables

Happy Monday!

I think one of my favorite design mediums is lucite.  I’ve got a pair of ghost chairs that I love and also would love to get a couple of those lucite nesting tables for beside our bed.  But one way that I especially love to see lucite is in an entry!

Taking up literally no visual space at all, lucite is the perfect selection for tight quarters.  Styling these tables with a lamp, a small vase of flowers, some books, and of course a drop zone for keys is really easy because the table is so chic.  Bonus points for an ottoman or two underneath!  🙂

Have a great day!

Fifth Wall Friday

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 9.15.44 PMInterior Design

How about this incredible restaurant in China, decorated with acrylic all around — including the incredible ceiling you see here with beige acrylic accents.  Only the best lighting for this magical fifth wall, of course.

This week I felt like I just could not keep up with life.  There are some more personal struggles I have been facing and it makes it difficult to stay motivated and involved with the day to day.  Hoping for a refreshing weekend with family time, a little bit of work, and some “me time,” too.  Hope you have a wonderful one!

Moody-Hued Rooms

When I was in interior design school, my teacher lovingly referred to rooms with overall moody palettes as “murdered-out” spaces.  It sounds pretty hardcore, and it is!  These rooms overwhelm you with their heavy color schemes but are not lacking in style and pizzaz if executed the right way.

How’s this for the ultimate in retro glam?  Glossy tiles everywhere, glossy door to continue the look on the outside, and tons of brass.  The icing on the cake is the dark green color splashed over every inch.  It keeps the wild in all the right places.

We see a lot of white interiors being punctuated with black, but this is arguably a black interior punctuated with white!  I love the change of pace.  The crystal-clear arms on all of the light fixtures and of course the glass insert on the door are just the elements of negative space needed to make this foyer perfect!

This interior utilizes black paint to cover every bit of the walls and ceiling. Furniture is kept dark with bits and pieces of wood here and there.  This is a moody room through and through.  Natural light is your best friend in a room like this!

A glossy blue hallways has just the right amount of visual interest in this home.  I love that the overall feel is moody because of the darker undertones in the blue that was chosen for this space.  A lighter or pale blue would have a much different vibe.

The more traditional feel of this office is great — and all of the black just creates a really luxurious appeal.  Accessories and furniture are kept on the lighter side, while the black walls keep the space very grounded.  White ceiling for relief.

This looks like cerused oak to me!  Crazy about that finish.  That light and bright trussed ceiling is the perfect design decision for an all-black office with an ornate decorative finish.  Your eyes need somewhere to rest!  Interest is kept alive with simple white paneling and jewelry for the ceiling.

Floating Vanities

Good morning!  I hope you had a great Valentine’s Day weekend.

It seems that a brewing trend in bathroom design is the floating vanity.  Welcome to contemporary, traditional, and transitional styles, this is a design that anyone can utilize!  I love when a trend can be spread over varying aesthetics and elements — my favorite!  🙂

Easing into Monday with inspiration.  Enjoy!

Ina Garten’s Barn

Oh, to have a giant “barn” in the Hamptons in my backyard.  Doesn’t that sound lovely?  One of my favorite House Beautiful features ever is all about Ina Garten’s barn, and the photos do not disappoint!  A serene color palette and no-fuss decorating scheme create a super comfortable living environment all throughout the home.  Slightly masculine, somewhat light and airy, and occasionally farm-y, I love this barn through and through.

Clever Valentine’s Day Food

Good morning and welcome to Monday.  I hope you had an awesome weekend.

Valentine’s Day is seriously right around the corner at this point and Grey and I are still undecided on what we should do — stay in and cook, or go out and brave the masses?  The thought of staying in has me thinking about all kinds of V-Day inspired food that we could make.  Because heart-shaped everything is clearly the only way to go for this holiday.

I love this heart citrus salad.  Really pretty and makes a good foundation for mass quantities of chocolate later.

This I love.  A heart-shaped vessel, and plenty of red vegetables.  Great for an appetizer and super unique and festive.

This isn’t overtly theme-y, and I like that about it, but it also works perfectly for the occasion.  Plus — who doesn’t like those little sprinkly mints?

If staying in is your choice, this would be a really fun project dinner to make with your significant other or heck, even a group of your best friends.  I’ve never made my own pasta but now might be the time.

Classic With a Modern Twist

Another day that got away.  I rhymed, and I’m looking forward to the weekend.  You, too?

One of my favorite design “styles” to look at pictures of is what I call ‘classic with a modern twist.’  I think this is borderline Transitional, but I feel like a lot of interiors that truly fall under that category have more modern elements than I’m referring to.  I like a traditional room with one or two elements that are either starkly modern or just kind of hint at a modern feel.  That’s my jam.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 8.28.39 PMDesign*Sponge

Here’s a little vignette that I love for all its traditional goodness, and then that artwork on each side of the mirror sort of throws you for a mod loop.  It keeps things interesting.

I’m just a little bit obsessed with this bathroom.  The bones of this space are classic all the way — herringbone, molding.  The chandelier and faucet are also very traditional.  Arguably the only modern elements in this room are the sink basin and the fact that the entire room is black.  Yet the whole room feels like an exercise in contemporary risk-taking.  LOVE that about it.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 8.30.49 PMSabbe Interior Design

Here’s another bathroom that marries these modern and classic elements beautifully.  Lots of brass, which can honestly go either way these days, traditional wood pieces, and then the sink which lends itself to a more modern feel.

Okay, THIS I love.  Like major.  There’s so much good here.  That desk is unbelievably beautiful — the pulls are really what I like the most about it.  But then there’s that chair.  Which is basically a klismos chair.  But it’s lucite.  This is the star of the whole vignette — and it’s see-through.  Amazing!!
