Valentine’s Day Floral Ideas

Hey there, and happy middle-of-the-work-week to you.  It’s been one of those days that just gets away from me.  I’m looking forward to a new day tomorrow.  🙂

Valentine’s Day is obviously the season of flower-giving and flower-receiving.  But I think that decorating with flowers is one of the easiest ways to add a little bit of Hallmark-holiday festivity into your space.

A long floral arrangement is obviously a great way to fill up a table.  And making it ombre is trendy and modern.

I still see these mugs in Anthroplogie all the time and am still not sick of seeing them used this way.

Calling all bud vases!  They’re perfect for an arrangement like this.  Alcohol tumblers or candle votives would work, too.  Think small-scale holders to get this look.

I think something little like this would be so pretty in a kitchen or in a bathroom.  It’s petite elegance at its finest.

My inner child loves this one as it basically channels Beauty and the Beast hardcore.  Easy to recreate, too.

For the non-tradish decorator, succulents are your friend.  A heart-shape is perfectly festive. Put this indoors or out!

This is an adorable idea for two (or more!) and probably only requires you to pick up one grocery store bouquet of flowers to make it happen.  Throw the rest in a vase and you’re sufficiently V-Day’d.

I had to include this because it is ridiculously good.  If you attempt this, I want to be your friend.  Meanwhile, I’ll be throwing some red blooms in a vase.  😉

I love this.  Any red, white, pink, or combination candy will do.  Unfussy, pretty, and you can just keep changing out the flowers for the month if you’re like me and things die on you two days after you bring them home.  Please tell me I’m not alone!

V-Day Jewel Vignette

Good morning!  I hope you had a great weekend.

Can you believe that January is over?  It was a whirlwind month for me, and to be honest, I was happy to wake up yesterday morning and kiss it goodbye.  🙂  I’m looking forward to Spring and honestly it’s really the fact that I don’t have to wear pants every day that I am excited about.  Not like I go out of the house without pants… but bring on the stretchy skirts!

There’s not much to do when decorating for Valentine’s Day.  I like my mother-in-law’s less-is-more approach to decorating this time of year.  She goes all out for Halloween, Fall, and Christmas, but there’s much less fuss for Spring and Summer decor.  Just little touches here and there.  This little vignette is in the kitchen on the peninsula next to the sink.

The blocks spell out different things — “HUGS,” “XOXO.”  I love the jewels as a little sparkle is never unwarranted, in my opinion.  The tray is from a MATCH coffee mug set that they picked up last year.  The cocktail shaker lives on it most days.  🙂

Ex Libris

There are few design details that I love more than a dash of Fornasetti thrown into the mix.

The ‘Ex Libris’ Fornasetti wallpaper is one of my favorites (though it is so difficult to even have a favorite at all!).  It adds that touch of whimsy that every home needs.

Here it is in the black and white colorway.  Do you have a favorite?

Valentine’s Day-Inspired Centerpiece

Christmas decorations came down a couple of weeks ago, and that is always bittersweet.  It’s not like the house is lacking in decor at all, but everything always looks a little bare once all of the cozy stuff gets put away.  My mom-in-law worked her magic and came up with a pretty little Valentine’s Day-inspired centerpiece for the library.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 7.01.40 PM

It’s simple and just slightly festive.  A beaded silver tray, two little silver mercury glass candle votives, and a big silver beaded hurricane.  She’s got a couple of these trays that are fancy pewter, but she’s also got the Target variety.  For the past several years, at Christmastime, I have seen Target put tons of this beaded silver stuff out on display near their dishes.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 7.02.16 PM

Moss and little dried roses fill up the tray.  Moss is one of the most versatile decorating ingredients you can have.  It’s perfect for any season, really — you can make it work always, and it’s a great filler.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 7.03.01 PM

I love how the little beading on the hurricane mimics the beading on the tray.  It’s the little things.  🙂

The Year of the Match Striker

Good morning!  I hope you had a great week last week.  Mine was crazy busy, which is why I just didn’t make it here to post.  I’m thankful for the busy-ness, though!

This past Christmas shall be known as The Year of the Match Striker.  Why, you ask?  Because my mother-in-law was gifted with not one, but two match strikers.  She started the day with zero and ended the day with two more than she had when she woke up.  🙂

This is the match striker that my husband and I got for her.  It’s super tiny and really cute.  We purchased it from this company, but through Domino.com.

This is the striker that she received from my father-in-law.  My mom-in-law is little by little infusing her more traditional decor with some modern furniture and accessories, so this was the perfect addition.

Cerused Oak

Well, Happy New Year to you!  Those last couple of weeks of December always get me.  They are so wonderful but so, so busy.  🙂  I hope you rung in the New Year in a way that was fun and special for you.  Did you make any resolutions?  I typically don’t make any but this year I just sort of made some personal decisions and goals for myself to help make this year a great one for me with a good balance of hard work and self-care.  That’s really what I am striving for this year.

I have seen a trend lately in some interior design photos — and that is Cerused Oak (aka Limed Oak)!  Once I searched for it intentionally, so much popped up — furniture, cabinetry, flooring…

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 6.43.06 PMMyDomaine

Even walls!  How beautiful is this finish?  I am pretty in love with it.  This look is achieved by applying a wax on the wood that seeps into its porous surface and creates this stunning detail.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 6.44.03 PMMyDomaine

I think I am most partial to seeing this finish in black.  It’s so glamorous!  This technique began back in the 16th century, but the wax chemical that was used to do this was really toxic.  Nowadays we are lucky and this can be DIY-ed with non-toxic waxes.  Because we’re cool and modern like that.

How amazing is this Kelly Wearstler cerused table?  A subtle statement piece, but a statement nonetheless!

After the 16th century popularity of cerused surfaces, it regained popularity during the Art Deco and midcentury modern periods.  Which brings us to today — when it is all over Pinterest, blogs, magazines, and many custom homes.

Last Bits of Christmas

I hope you have all been having a wonderful Holiday season.  🙂  Ours has been great — we are so blessed to be surrounded by all of our family and have had a season with lots of time with everyone.  I thought I would take today to show the last little bit of the Christmas decor around the house.  I already showed you all of the big stuff, but the rest is just little bits and pieces that make the house feel warm and festive.

This is where the incoming Christmas cards are kept.  My mother-in-law took an old book and folded all of the pages down — now the cards just slip right in.

Since my mom-in-law decorates themed trees now, all of the home-made ornaments from the kids go on this cute little ornament tree.

The Christmas Tree

Hey there, friends.  I hope you’re all having a great day.  Today I thought I would share the Christmas tree since I haven’t done that yet!  My mother-in-law typically puts up two big trees — one in the library/dining room and one in the Brick Room.  This year she opted for a little less decor than usual, so we’ve got one tree up in the Brick Room.  Which makes sense, because I’ve mentioned before that on Christmas Day, this is the room where most all of the festivities take place.  The rest happens in the kitchen.  🙂

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 2.04.46 PM

It’s a pretty tree, with lots of red and gold, which goes perfectly with the decor in this room.  And look!  You get a rare Kuma sighting.  🙂

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 2.05.24 PM

We’ve sort of got a red, black, and white theme going on this year with those presents under the tree.  MacKenzie Childs-inspired!

I love the birds on the tree.  And there are quite a few red Santas, too — all different from one another.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 2.06.39 PM

There is also no shortage of feathers and mesh ribbon on this tree, either.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 2.07.21 PM

Here’s the tree with the lights on.  At night it is gorgeous.  When you drive up into the driveway, it is visible from the windows outside.  A beautiful sight to come home to!

Here is the fireplace in the same room.

This is the same garland that goes up every year.  That swagged red tassel is my favorite part — it is beaded!
