AIID

As I have mentioned on this blog a couple of times, I did receive formal training for interior design at an amazing boutique interior design school in Arizona.  I had reached a point in my life where I think so many people end up — I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life!  I had some prior college experience, was working a job that was really not going to take me anywhere, and all I really knew was that I had a love for making homes pretty.  I think the first time I Googled ‘interior design schools’ was in December of 2012, and after checking out the Art Institutes (way too expensive for me), I found American Institute of Interior Design.  It was going to be a 6-month intensive program, four days a week for seven hours a day, and after that you are a certified interior designer.  I met with Judy Thompson, who owns the school and teaches the majority of the classes, and instantly fell in love not only with her, but with the interior of the school itself.  Beauty surrounded me at every turn, and it truly was going to be the most inspiring environment to work in.  I didn’t waste any time — I started in January of 2013, and the rest is history!

I thought I’d take you on a tour of the school today, because there is so much inspiration to take in here!  This is definitely not your average school.  🙂

This is right when you walk in.  A color board is always on display — these are what we would make to close out many of the units we studied.  If you have worked with an interior designer or architect in the past, you might recognize a board like this!

Here’s a view looking toward the entrance.  The shimmer wall — one of my favorite things!

This is The Eye of Design.  Gorgeous painted mural and a really pretty vignette with those seatbelt chairs, gilded end table, and of course that lucite coffee table!

This is the Admin office.  Really pretty and traditional, with a little bit of modern flair.  Not a bad view, either.  😉

This is the view walking toward the classroom area.  More shimmer wall!

Love this lounge area, with super fun throw pillows, an interesting settee, and of course a disco ball.

 Here’s the classroom.

And the back of the classroom, looking out.

Chicest room ever — the library!  Check out that light fixture.  The finishes in this room are insane.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.58.53 AM

The perfect use of a wall niche.  You can never have enough tufting!

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.59.32 AM

And finally, the room we spent a HUGE amount of time in — the Design Studio.  That whole back wall is covered in fabric books, wallpaper sample books, and every cabinet holds any type of finish you could want — woods, tiles, metals, trims, etc.

If you have a flair for design and are thinking about going to school to learn more, I cannot say enough good things about AIID.  Seriously.  And if you’re on the fence about it — just do it!  There are so many careers out there that you can use your training for.  The options are endless, and you learn about that and so much more at this school.  Plus you won’t find a more inspiring place to learn.  🙂

A Last Bit of Summer

Well, you may be able to tell that I did a little bit of editing on the site the other day.  It was time for a little refresher, and I must say it’s looking pretty cozy around here.  🙂  Perfect for…Fall!!!

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.49.21 AM

A last look at Summer decor…  Corks, candles, and seashells.  Can you see them in there?  I have a feeling Halloween decor will be coming out soon, and the shells and bits and pieces of Summer will be going back into storage until next year.  It’s one of my favorite times of the year.  Funny how many of us wait all year for the end of the year, when it seems like everything is just magical and warm.

Summer and Fall

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.45.09 AM

Another easy summer scene…this one with an antler taking center stage.  Because what’s a room without an antler or two?  Beach glass, odd-shaped and unique seashells, and don’t forget the minis.  Aren’t they cute?

The air is getting cooler in the mornings, and my mother-in-law even exclaimed, It’s time to decorate for Halloween!  Excitement ensued on my part.  I’m looking forward to Fall, cooler weather, an abundance of family-time, and then winter where we hope some big things are on the horizon for us.

But first, breakfast outside and a little bit of a quiet lull today that I will welcome with open arms.

Common Things

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.36.14 AM

I ran across this quote the other day, read it, and thought to myself… Wow, this really applies to my life right now.  At a time when I am feeling generally unsettled in many aspects, I have to say that this helped, and it rang true for me.  I find that I am happiest when I can notice all of the ordinary things in my day that are beautiful, funny, or just good.  It’s when I overlook these things that I start to feel panicked and anxious — worried for the future, angry at certain aspects of my life, and uncomfortable in my current situation.

Grey and I have it so good.  We have families who care for us, we have a pretty home to live in for the time being while we save up for one of our own, we have good jobs…  So where does this feeling come from within me?  I have heard the quote, Comparison is the thief of joy,” so many times — and it is so, so true.  It’s something I struggle with on a daily basis, and the days that I struggle with it more are noticeably less happy than those that I do what I do, and let other people do what they do, without comparison.

So for today, I thought I would make a short list of the common things that I extract happiness from; the things that, if I notice them, they make me smile and fill me up with joy.  The list became long when I started to think about things…but here are just a few…

Sharing ice cream with my pup.  He always knows when the cones come out to follow me wherever I go.  I just can’t resist that face and vanilla mustache!

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.37.45 AM

Having a place to drink my coffee or eat my breakfast outside.  This is my favorite little corner, and this past week the mornings have been cool enough to enjoy this space again.  I can’t wait to create a cozy coffee area in our someday-house.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.38.24 AM

Flowers of any kind…but especially orchids.  Is there anything friendlier?

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.39.32 AM

Elevating the everyday…  Taking a brunch and making it special with a simple table setting. Even doing something special for dinner…  This is our Easter table from this year.  I love the little things that my mother-in-law does to make dining and family time special for all of us.  It makes me feel comfortable and it’s one of the memories that I will always keep about her.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.40.13 AM

And finally — any meal, whatsoever, where this is my view.  The love of my life, the one who keeps my strong, and who is strong for me when I cannot be.

Fifth Wall Friday

Hey there, and happy Friday to you!  I’ve decided to start posting something sort of fun on Fridays…  We’ll call it ‘Fifth Wall Friday‘ — and for those of you who don’t know what this refers to, it’s your ceiling!  I used to do ‘Fashion Friday,’ but I’m not all that fashion-y, so, yeah…  🙂

I hope you enjoy these posts!  Pretty ceilings are fun to look at.

Classic + Modern Architecture

I have been drawn to a particular style of architecture lately, and I don’t know what to call it.  Classic architecture with a modern twist?  Old meets new?

Home Adore

Is there a name for this?  I’m so intrigued by it!

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.27.09 AMHome Adore

I especially love this one.  The existing brick structure looks so old, and then that new modern addition is super simple but adds so much.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.28.03 AMBlood & Champagne

I can totally get behind the idea that these original structures are being salvaged and the architects are just essentially building on with a more modular design.  It’s green, and it’s beautiful too!

Seashell Centerpiece

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.23.00 AM

A little seashell centerpiece that I created using a metal tray, candle, and various seashells.  I especially love the tiny ones — they are perfectly shaped but so small and delicate!  There is some beach glass scattered around, too.  And, of course, sand — a messy decorating material, but necessary for beach-y scenes like this!

Wave Walls

The first time I ever saw a wave wall, it was at the school I went to for interior design, American Institute of Interior Design.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.17.54 AM

One of these days, I will take you on a virtual tour of the school — it’s crazy how beautiful that place is and how lucky I feel to have found it.  But that wave wall was just…  There was something about it.  I think it was one of my most favorite things in the whole school; and there was a lot to love.

There are a lot of different companies that produce this type of material.  Essentially it is a series of interlocking panels that create the texture.

Gorgeous, right?

Summer Decorating: Random Seashells

I’m back with a little bit more of our summer decor around the house.  After making a few different summery vignettes (which I will show you a little bit later), I strategically placed a few shells around to create a summer vibe.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.13.39 AM

Is it just me — or is the ‘random’ look sometimes harder to pull off — and more calculated — than it rightfully should be?

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.14.19 AM

Effortless is sometimes less than effortless.  At least for me.  Like, I think this will look good here!  And then, nope.  And again, and again, until I get that feeling like *ahhhhh* — all is right in the world.  Or at least in this corner.  🙂

5 Target Finds That Look Better in Person

Grey and I stopped into Target yesterday morning to pick something up, and as per usual, I wanted to check out the home decor section.  At first glance, I was really disappointed with what was out on display (wondering if they’re transitioning Threshold seasons?), but we walked the aisles and found some nice things.  Or, I should say, Grey found some nice things — because I had tunnel vision and was basically walking around saying how ugly everything was under my breath.  I rounded up five things that caught our attention — and these five things look way better in person than they do in these pictures.  Much higher quality, an emphasis on materials, and just better in general.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.07.00 AM

Love these nailhead trim chairs.  The fabric looks durable, and the legs are sort of an espresso with a woodgrain detail — not jet black like they look in this picture.  The nailheads were generally straight (something difficult to find in more bargain-level furniture), and they are only about $85 each!  That’s a pretty big steal for upholstered dining chairs of any variety.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.07.39 AM

We both liked this, as we have been sort of keeping our eyes open for a leaning bookshelf for a lot of years.  I will say that this is slightly more contemporary than what I would purchase for myself, and the wood pieces on the sides were a cherry stain — not my favorite. But this is a nice piece of furniture, heavy-duty, and would look great in a pair.  Under $200.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.08.12 AM

LOVE this, and bonus that it is on casters.  The fabric is super luxurious and textured, the color is a perfect neutral without looking too browny-beige, and there is a little bit of piping detail around the sides.  The top opens for extra storage and stays open on its own.  This was beautiful and under $150 — crazy!

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.08.46 AM

Gorgeous wood floor lamp with a Restoration Hardware feel.  This looks like a heavy piece of furniture without the price point.  The finish is washed and rustic and its a perfect addition to so many different home styles — French country and traditional being the more obvious choices, but this could also work in a more urban loft aesthetic or a bohemian vibe.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 5.09.17 AM

This.  I wish I could have purchased this, and had I had the extra $$ I would have seeing as it is essentially the color palette I want for our future home.  It’s a large piece of art, framed behind glass, with a gorgeous gray weathered frame that I love almost as much as the print itself.  The colors are watery so the landscape is not so landscape-y, but more dreamy and ethereal.  LOVE this.  Sad to leave it behind.
