Classic With a Modern Twist

Another day that got away.  I rhymed, and I’m looking forward to the weekend.  You, too?

One of my favorite design “styles” to look at pictures of is what I call ‘classic with a modern twist.’  I think this is borderline Transitional, but I feel like a lot of interiors that truly fall under that category have more modern elements than I’m referring to.  I like a traditional room with one or two elements that are either starkly modern or just kind of hint at a modern feel.  That’s my jam.

Here’s a little vignette that I love for all its traditional goodness, and then that artwork on each side of the mirror sort of throws you for a mod loop.  It keeps things interesting.

I’m just a little bit obsessed with this bathroom.  The bones of this space are classic all the way — herringbone, molding.  The chandelier and faucet are also very traditional.  Arguably the only modern elements in this room are the sink basin and the fact that the entire room is black.  Yet the whole room feels like an exercise in contemporary risk-taking.  LOVE that about it.

Here’s another bathroom that marries these modern and classic elements beautifully.  Lots of brass, which can honestly go either way these days, traditional wood pieces, and then the sink which lends itself to a more modern feel.

Okay, THIS I love.  Like major.  There’s so much good here.  That desk is unbelievably beautiful — the pulls are really what I like the most about it.  But then there’s that chair.  Which is basically a klismos chair.  But it’s lucite.  This is the star of the whole vignette — and it’s see-through.  Amazing!!

Ex Libris

There are few design details that I love more than a dash of Fornasetti thrown into the mix.

The ‘Ex Libris’ Fornasetti wallpaper is one of my favorites (though it is so difficult to even have a favorite at all!).  It adds that touch of whimsy that every home needs.

Here it is in the black and white colorway.  Do you have a favorite?

Happy Monday to you!

Cerused Oak

Well, Happy New Year to you!  Those last couple of weeks of December always get me.  They are so wonderful but so, so busy.  🙂  I hope you rung in the New Year in a way that was fun and special for you.  Did you make any resolutions?  I typically don’t make any but this year I just sort of made some personal decisions and goals for myself to help make this year a great one for me with a good balance of hard work and self-care.  That’s really what I am striving for this year.

I have seen a trend lately in some interior design photos — and that is Cerused Oak (aka Limed Oak)!  Once I searched for it intentionally, so much popped up — furniture, cabinetry, flooring…

Even walls!  How beautiful is this finish?  I am pretty in love with it.  This look is achieved by applying a wax on the wood that seeps into its porous surface and creates this stunning detail.

I think I am most partial to seeing this finish in black.  It’s so glamorous!  This technique began back in the 16th century, but the wax chemical that was used to do this was really toxic.  Nowadays we are lucky and this can be DIY-ed with non-toxic waxes.  Because we’re cool and modern like that.

How amazing is this Kelly Wearstler cerused table?  A subtle statement piece, but a statement nonetheless!

After the 16th century popularity of cerused surfaces, it regained popularity during the Art Deco and midcentury modern periods.  Which brings us to today — when it is all over Pinterest, blogs, magazines, and many custom homes.

Can you believe that this ceiling has been installed with a system of colored threads, creating this unbelievable design?  I can’t think of a more spectacular sight than seeing this in person!  Loving the colors — one of my favorite combinations.

Another week in the books, and it only seemed to get busier as it progressed.  This means that I have a full weekend ahead of me of work, work, work (plus a little bit of fun thrown in there for good measure).  I hope you have a calm couple of days away from the office or wherever you spend your weeks.  Enjoy!

Color Study: Taupe

Taupe is my color.

Not in fashion.  Nope, that’s not when taupe is my color.  (Although I do love a good taupe nail polish).

But in the design world?  Taupe is my color.

You know what my spirit animal would be.

Pair taupe seamlessly with gray, metallics, and nearly any wood finish.  This is a very forgiving color.  A very kind color.

Toss in virtually any pop of color, and you just added an element of modernity to your space.  Any crisp color will do the trick.

In my brain, taupe promotes peace.  My ultimate zen color.

Funky mirrored ceiling, amazing bubble light fixture, and just the right amount of gray + white + neutral colors, textures, and tones.  It is safe to say that this room is inspiring to me on many levels — not the least of which is the striking minimalism that is achieved without it feeling ice cold, baby!

I hope you’ve all had a great week.  The pace has slowed down a bit for me and I am enjoying lots of time working by the tree, shoving my feet in piles of blankets, and grabbing an occasional sweet seasonal beverage from S-bux.  (Not good for my waistline, but puts me in the spirit!)

Have a great weekend!

Decorating With Fruit

Good morning!  We made it over the Monday hump.  🙂

I have, of course, been pinning a lot of Fall decor lately, but something that I have been seeing quite a bit of is table decor or vignettes including Fall fruit!  I love this because it’s an organic way to liven up your space — and you’ve got options here.  There is some very convincing fake fruit out there for the decoration variety that you want to keep up for longer periods of time; but for a table setting, why not use some fresh fruit?

Here’s a candle centerpiece with pomegranates, Bosc pears, and leaves/greenery.  Check out that odd number of candles, in varying heights, too.  We talked about decorating in odd numbers last week on the blog!

There’s something about decorating with silver this time of year that I just love.  Again, pears make a lovely centerpiece — especially the Bosc ones because of their rich brown color.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 11.03.02 AM

Here’s a centerpiece from my in-laws’ house from last year.  Cranberries are another great Fall fruit to decorate with.  These are fake and sprinkle a wreath — we just slipped the wreath around this hurricane. The silver tray adds volume.

Can I count nuts as fruit?  How cute are these sprinkling the center of this table?  They add that “something small” that this large-scale centerpiece needed.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 11.04.38 AMCountry Living

Don’t forget grapes!  They make a beautiful table that much warmer and add great texture.  How pretty is this?!

Have a great Tuesday, everyone!
