Thoughtful Valentines to Celebrate the Day of Love

Happy LOVE month to you!  I have a bunch of fun posts planned over the next couple of weeks, but I’d better get moving because Valentine’s Day is fast-approaching!  Today I’m sharing some fun and thoughtful Valentines for any loved one in your life.  These are simple DIYs, but there’s something about simplicity during this holiday that makes it extra sweet, don’t you think?

I love the idea of filling these little treat bags with a few of your favorite things or something yummy and sweet.  Super simple — just cut out a heart shape and use a mini clothespin to fasten it to an ordinary white paper lunch bag.

A Bubbly Life

These are printable flower bouquet wraps.  Grab some blooms from your local grocery store or farmers’ market, and finish with some fun washi tape!

Succulents are easy to take care of (if you’re not me – ha!) and they usually last a really long time.  😉  I love this sweet little festive planting idea.

These DIY bags are adorable and versatile!  Use them for wine bottles, candy, or to wrap around a floral arrangement.  This idea really is the perfect festive hostess gift.

Hi Sugarplum

I think this is a great idea for girlfriends.  And honestly, who doesn’t love Starbucks?!  If there is a local coffee shop that you like even better, this is still a fantastic idea!

Say Yes

The perfect little craft for anyone who loves paper and also has a love note to send!  😉  This is darling and I love the step-by-step picture tutorial making it easy to follow.

This is a quick treat basket that I brought over to my in-laws’ house.  I used this Valentine’s Day cookie recipe, and everything else is from the Target Dollar Spot.  The little cardboard berry baskets were something that I picked up a month or two ago, and I just tucked in two heart doilies, then nestled the cookies on top.  The package fit four perfectly.

It really is the little things, isn’t it?  What DIY gifts do you like to make for Valentine’s Day?

Last Bits of Winter

Good morning to you — and Happy Monday!  It’s been a busy month with a lot of changes in the works, but I am feeling more inspired than I have in a long time.  The Christmas decor is, of course, gone by now and I even have the house newly decorated for Valentine’s Day, which I can’t wait to show you in the coming days/weeks.  It’s a special time for us, with each new season and holiday bringing us new opportunities to nest in this space that we worked so hard for.  It’s a magical time with many blessings and we are so very grateful for each day that we spend in our new home.  We love it when we are here, we miss it when we are away from it, and there really isn’t much more to ask for than that, huh?

With Christmas in the past, we took down all of our holiday and winter decor, but my mom-in-law created some beautiful winter vignettes to savor the season in her home.  We’re in the last days of January and with that means warmer temperatures on the horizon for us Arizonans (70’s this week!).  These are the last days of winter for us and so I thought I would snap some photos of her beautiful decor and share the inspiration.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.58.14 PM

This coffee table centerpiece is all about the metallics — from the tray, to the strings of gold beads, to the gilded pine cones, this centerpiece is wintry glam at its finest.  There are also pearls inside of the hurricane, and the candles were made by my mom-in-law who has started a new hobby!

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.58.50 PM

This dining table centerpiece is in the same room, so the glamour continues.  There is never a shortage of candles in this house — or candle holders!  😉

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.59.26 PM

This is the foyer table, and on it rests a snowy village scene.  I love the little houses inside of apothecary jars, with decorative snow.  The beaded “snow” on the table also has those little LED fairy lights that you can buy from Target mixed in — very pretty at night.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.59.59 PM

A snowball candle… a family tradition.  My mom-in-law has a collection of trays that make decorating so much fun in her home.  This is one of my favorites.  Antlers add fantastic texture and can be used year-round in all sorts of centerpieces.  Decorative snow is an excellent filler.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 6.00.33 PM

This little niche in the library just needed a festive wreath for a wintry feel.  This is a great area for displaying objet d’art, as shown above, but also for staging desserts or using as a buffet for family dinners — a truly versatile space!

Is your home still decorated for winter?  What “ingredients” do you like to use?

2016

Happy happy New Year to you.  Most people that I talk to are glad to send 2016 packing… I don’t think I have ever seen so many memes about a year the way that we have about 2016, either.  On some level, it’s sort of nice to know that we have all been in the same boat this past year.

2016 was the year of my highest highs and my lowest lows, which was really difficult to navigate.  Everything really began on New Year’s Eve of 2015 when my Gramma ended up in the hospital, and things just kind of fell apart after that.  We trudged through until April, and then I lost one of the most influential and important people in my life; a woman who helped raise me and shape me, understood me and loved me in the most tender, selfless, and hilarious way.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.17.45 PM

I was blindsided.  We all were.  And then a few short weeks later, my husband’s Grandmom passed.  It was a heavy time for our two families.  And coming back to reality after all of that loss, as the world sort of expects you to become a part of it again, to show up every day just like everyone else — that, for me, was the hardest part.  There was a part of me that didn’t want to join the world.  If I joined the world, that would mean that she was really gone, wouldn’t it?

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.18.23 PM

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.18.48 PM

A couple of months later, in the heart of June, I was spent.  I think we all were.  Greyson and I had a getaway in Flagstaff and then spent some time in California with his family.  Most of our days were in the company of the beach and each other, and one of the days we went to Universal Studios, just the two of us, and had the best time.  I felt like I could breathe again.  But once we got home and the distractions were gone, I felt all of that pain and sadness work its way back into my heart again.  I missed my Gramma so much, and I longed for her, longed to talk with her and have her hug me and pat my back the way she always did.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.19.24 PM

Our hearts opened even wider by loving on this sweet soul.  We feel more connected than ever to him, reaching for him and having him reach for us when we need one another.  He took to sleeping with us every night, wedged between us.  We have a family bed and we love it.  We wouldn’t want it any other way.  This baby of ours has brought us laughter and light and comfort when we needed it most.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.20.51 PM

2016 was a strengthening year for our marriage.  I needed more than I have ever needed, and Grey showed up every day to love me, remind me of my magic, find me in my sadness, and love me right there, in my most vulnerable moments.  This was a year of growth for us.  I look back on when I married him and I know that I loved him more than I had ever loved him then; but the way that I love him now is deeper, with more passion and it is so full.  2016 could have been different for our marriage, but it made our roots intertwine and grow deep in the ground.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.21.31 PM

2016 was the year we lost Zoe… the friend I had through my teen years at my parents’ house.  A big dog, the kind you can lay on and snuggle with.  It was hard to lose this friend.  She was special, and she was so, so kind.  She was tender and loving.  I miss her.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.23.21 PM

And a few weeks later, our family was blessed with Charlie, the biggest lap dog we have ever had.  He is smart and sweet, and he pretty much lives for his squeaky ball.  He speaks, and he dances, he shakes, and he lays down.  He loves walks.  He can make friends with any human or dog.  All he wants is love.  He is the perfect example of how we should all show each other that all we want is love from one another.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.24.15 PM

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.24.52 PM

We did what felt insurmountable in 2016…we bought our first home.  We set a huge financial goal that seemed impossible, but with the help of our families, we made it possible.  Along with this amazing blessing was the equally amazing sadness that came with it, wanting my Gramma to see this happen for us and to come to our house, and knowing that she couldn’t.  Waffling between happiness and sadness, and feeling frustrated with myself for feeling sad, a Why Can’t You Just Be Happy?! feeling — this was hard.  But mostly happy.  Mostly feeling grateful and knowing that she is with me, in this house, filling it with her love.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.25.42 PM

The big news of 2016 is that Kuma got a yard.  🙂  Watching him explore each day and seeing his excitement when he goes outside is pretty much the best thing ever.

And so, on New Year’s Day, Greyson was at work and I found a photo of myself that made me smile.

Screen Shot 2017-03-18 at 5.26.37 PM

I was struck by the joy on my face.  It’s nothing spectacular that I am holding, just a cupcake.  But that cupcake is making me so happy.  It’s just a little thing.  This is what I want for myself in 2017.  Joy in the little things.  2016 beat me up and I lost my joy.  I lost the ability to find it in all the little things.  And so I am entering 2017 with the willingness and prayer that I experience moments like this, that I create moments like this for myself; that I have crumbs on my shirt, messy hair, and a small gap in my teeth and I just don’t care — because the little things are making me happy.  Finding joy in the small things is a habit that has to be fostered and it is what creates an existence of gratitude.  I’m not going into 2017 with any resolutions or restrictions; only with the hope and determination to find the joy.

I hope that this year, you find joy, too.

Happy New Year!

5 Things to Do With Christmas Cards

Happy Friday, everyone, and happy New Year’s Eve Eve to you!  😉  I hope you’ve had a great week.  It was so fun this year receiving Christmas cards at our new home.  It felt even more special than usual that they were arriving in our own mailbox and entering our own door!  Everything feels kind of monumental like that these days, which is both funny and nice.  This got me thinking, though — how can I re-purpose these cards so that I don’t have to just throw them away.  I’ve got some ideas for you today!

1. Create your own gift tags.

2. Make popsicle stick puzzles for your kiddos or other little ones in your life.

3. Put together a card flip-book.

4. DIY a garland for next year’s tree.

Winter Transitions

Good morning to you!  I hope that if you celebrated Christmas over the weekend it was a joyous one.

Taking down Christmas decorations within the next couple of weeks is sort of inevitable for all of us.  The tree will come down, and the super festive ornaments will be packed away, and our houses will feel a little empty without all of the greenery and twinkly lights.  I typically do look forward to this, to be honest…  There’s something about a fresh start for the New Year that just makes me feel really content.  But for those of you who want some ideas for transitioning your Christmas decorations to simple wintry decorations, I’ve got some pretty pictures for us to look at for inspiration today.  🙂

Fake snow, rustic logs, berry sprigs, pine greenery…  Maybe you already have some centerpieces with those ingredients around your home, and if your vignettes have any ornaments sprinkled about, just take those away and you’re left with something perfectly wintry.

Boxwood is great for winter because it is simple but still gives a nod to the season.  I love these sweet little topiaries with a little bit of ribbon for a festive touch.

Don’t shy away from pine cones when transitioning your decor.  They add awesome texture.  Magnolia leaves, too!  Those are something that you don’t see in everyday winter decor but aren’t they lovely?

Aren’t these icy candle holders so pretty?  I love the texture of the branches and leaves.  This would be a really fun DIY project.

This is a perfect wintry centerpiece that my mom-in-law created.  Fake snow, a snowball candle in the center, pine, pine cones, some sprigs, and of course an antler!  All things that you would find in nature.  🙂

Catching Up

Well, happy Saturday to you!  Can you believe that Christmas is so close?  Grey and I got all of our shopping done this week and it was so much fun.  All of the presents are wrapped and underneath the tree, making it really feel like Christmas in our new home.

All I have to say about this post is: Get ready for picture overload.  Instead of breaking all of these photos up into different posts, I want to get all of our little decorating pictures on the blog so that starting January things are fresh — no backlogged posts!  😉  I’ve got some vignettes from before Christmas decorations came out and, of course, after I decorated for the holiday.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.32.20 PM

A couple of weeks after we moved in, I found these awesome chairs for a steal on Amazon and we bought them right away.  So far I couldn’t be happier with this purchase — they are really comfortable and look great.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.32.55 PM

Typically on the table I had flowers in a fun vase and my non-refrigerated veggies when we first moved in.  I think that with each changing season/holiday I will do a pretty centerpiece, though.  The areas that I have to decorate in my home are minimal so I want to maximize the festiveness!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.33.29 PM

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.33.58 PM

Here’s a view of our living room before Christmas decorations went up and before things moved around a bit.  I’m looking forward to adding some color into the house once HomeGoods gets their Spring pillows!  Every color they have right now is a bit too warm for what I want in this space.  But the neutral feels really clean and cozy.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.34.33 PM

I’m loving having this huge coffee table to style!  This was also before Christmas.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.36.30 PM

This is a lucite tray from CB2 that I got a few Christmases ago, and layered on top of it is the DIY marble tray that I made.  Then there are a bunch of my favorite things, which I talked about in a past blog post.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.37.04 PM

I just love this succulent that my brother’s girlfriend got for me and it has moved around a lot in our house, but it works perfectly with the rest of the decor.  The coasters are marble with an agate center and are from HomeGoods.  We have a marble theme goin’ on.  😉

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.37.36 PM

I love having silver bowls and trays to corral things that might not be super pretty on their own.  I find mine at antique stores — they’re everywhere!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.38.09 PM

So far my SureFit slipcover is holding up well.  It could probably go in for a wash at this point but it was kind of a pain to get it on the sofa and there is an ironing process as well, so I’m thinking that after Christmas I will throw it in there and see what happens.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.38.42 PM

Now we’re getting into Christmas!  🙂  These are just acorns from my Aunt Lulu in New Jersey that I put in a white bowl.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.39.15 PM

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.39.43 PM

These are thumbtack trees that I made a very long time ago.  They were super easy — just styrofoam cones and then get to sticking!  I like to place them on candleholders and then in this vignette I just set them on a silver tray and draped the beads.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.40.15 PM

Candlesticks are versatile… they can hold pinecones, too!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.40.47 PM

There’s my Gramma’s “tall Santa” that she loved so much.  🙂  And our tree.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.41.22 PM

On our tree we have an array of purple ornaments, flowers, birds, and Santas…

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.41.56 PM

Also plenty of other pretty ornaments.  When Grey and I first moved in together, my mother-in-law gave us all of these ornaments for our first tree.  It was a fancy first tree!  🙂

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.42.28 PM

We plan to transition out the purple slowly and have gold, silver, and neutral ornaments eventually.  But this tree has served us well for six years!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.43.02 PM

Here’s a little peek at the living room as I snapped it yesterday.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.43.38 PM

This table has already moved around a lot but I really like it in this spot.  This was a HomeGoods find — I love the quatrefoil detail.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.44.09 PM

 …But, I clearly need a gold/mirror intervention.  😉

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.44.47 PM

Here’s the last picture I have for you… Our coffee table as of yesterday.  Don’t you love bud vases?  I had some roses that were going bad in a bouquet with these carnations and I just snipped a few healthy red flowers and threw them in a small vase.

I hope you have the best weekend!

Living Room Seating

Happy Week of Thanksgiving, everyone!  I am so excited for this week and also for Friday because I will be putting up Christmas!  Rocking out to Christmas music in my jammies, trimming the tree, ignoring the Black Friday craziness.  This will be a special Christmas for us as it is the first Christmas in our first home.  So this week will be full of decorating, zhushing, and festiveness.

I relocated our ghost chairs from the kitchen and got some awesome new chairs for such a steal for that room, which I will show you later this week!  I put one ghost chair in the office, and one in the living room.  I love the additional seating — it’s very convenient!  Especially since the sofa is a slipcover that is lovely but gets messed up easily, so if I’m the only one home, this gives me another place to sit without disturbing the sofa.  😉  I’l probably get over that, but for now I just love when it looks relaxed but not too relaxed, ha!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.20.37 PM

The table was on clearance from HomeGoods and I just couldn’t say no.  At this point we are done buying furniture for the house…we will be waiting for Christmas.  The living room is more or less put together at this point but there are a few things that I want in order to complete it.  All in good time.  🙂

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.22.44 PM

I love orchids.  I think they are my absolute favorite kind of plant that there is.  Trader Joe’s has them for a really inexpensive price and they are usually all very healthy-looking.  My father-in-law is a plant guy and he says he always gets his orchids from there.  The top of this table is marble and so is the coaster, so that works!  The candle is just a simple Glade Apple Cinnamon candle.  Smells so good!

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.23.24 PM

Since we moved in right in the middle of the Fall season, I really haven’t done any Fall decorating.  That little pumpkin sits in the corner and it’s so cute.  There’s a face on the other side but I like it plain!  I think it is from Jim Shore?  My mom-in-law gave it to me when she was clearing out some Fall decorations.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.24.06 PM

Other little Fall touches include a bowl of acorns lovingly plucked from New Jersey by my Aunt Lulu and a faux fur blanket from Restoration Hardware that was a Christmas gift a few years ago — so cozy!

One more view of this new little spot.  🙂

Have a great Monday, everyone!

Halloween Decor…All the Rest

Happy November 1st, everyone!  🙂  I hope you all had a fun and spooky Halloween.  Ours was great and although we are bummed to see another one go, we are so looking forward to the beginning of the ‘Holiday’ season.  I’ve seen some Christmas-y commercials and no, I don’t think it’s too early!  I’m loving it!  😉

But before we jump into full-on Fall mode, I thought I would take some time today to share the rest of our Halloween decor.  This was an epic year for it, and it seemed like every time my mom-in-law went to Target, she came back with something else that was awesome.  🙂  Here’s my Halloween House Tour…

Thanks so much for following along this Halloween season with our fun decor!  Have a wonderful day!

Halloweenie Mantel

Hopefully you are gearing up for a fun, festive weekend celebrating this spooky holiday.  🙂  I always have loved Halloween for some non-traditional reasons…  My mom always makes the same simple meal ‘sopa’ soup and hot dogs, and we pass out candy to the many kiddos.  Then my dad and I watch whatever cheesy horror movies are on TV after eight o’clock.  There’s also the element of freshness that arrives the following morning, November 1st, when the promise of Thanksgiving and Christmas is dwindling in the air.  So Halloween is sort of the kick-off to a couple of months of so much cozy family time.

I have so much to show you still, and I am running out of time!  On Monday I hope to continue the Halloween tour and just post all the rest…  😉

But today’s post is about my favorite room and the mantel that I love.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.30.51 AM

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.31.23 AM

Implementing the decor that is usually on this mantel, my mom-in-law just added a few more details to make this spot extra festive.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.31.58 AM

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.32.28 AM

We’ve got pumpkins on candle sticks and all.the.feathers.  There’s no shortage of feathers in this house.  😉

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.33.05 AM

This little cage is completely multi-purpose and makes a great perch for a crow.  I have seen this cage used a variety of ways and during different seasons.  Shop your house for items that will work in your vignettes before you go to a store!  That’s one of the biggest rules to decorating on a budget.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.33.49 AM

Pretty little details, even in a spooky scene.

I hope you have a perfectly ghostly weekend.  I will see you back here Monday with ALL the decor!

A Hogwarts Display

Good morning and welcome to the Monday before Halloween.  🙂  Do you have your candy ready for the trick-or-treaters?  Have you made any fun and spooky sweets yet?  I’m hoping I’ll have time to make a little something later this week or over the weekend.

I’m continuing my Halloween tour today and we’re heading into the room off the foyer to see a fun little display that reminds me of my favorite magical place…Hogwarts.  🙂  Grey and I took a trip to Harry Potter World over the summer and this vignette really makes me think of the walk through Hogwarts that is long and meandering that you take before you go on the big Quidditch ride.

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.25.01 AM

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 12.25.34 AM

The tray is actually a stone Lazy Susan, so this display can be turned on a whim.  I love the candle sticks — they remind me so much of Slytherin house.  The tombstone is from the Target Dollar Spot and is a heavy concrete material, which was an exciting find — no styrofoam here!  The labels are printables and can be found here.

Inside of the huge glass jar is just a bunch of black tulle and a skeleton hand.  🙂  Dark-covered vintage books and a feather complete the display.  Feathers are to Halloween as sand is to summer when it comes to decorating tools around here — you just can never have enough!
