Transition Centerpieces

A couple of days ago, I posted about transitioning your wreath from a festive Christmas one to something more appropriate for just plain ol’ winter.  I thought I could do a similar post about table centerpieces.  I love Christmas centerpieces just as much as everyone, but I also love a good centerpiece just because, too.  Here are some pretty wintry ones that I think you will love.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.43.52 PMEtsy

This centerpiece is pretty rustic, but I love all of the texture.  It is literally filled with texture — something that I really crave during the winter months.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.45.11 PMHome Bunch

I know that this is only number two, but can I say that this is my favorite?  The pine swag, the gold flatware, the simple white dinner plate, and of course, the candles…  I love it all.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.46.08 PMBHG

In my opinion, lanterns always make good decor.  You just can’t go wrong with them.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.46.58 PMBuckets of Burlap

I think those are little rosemary trees on the table — you can find these at Trader Joe’s and they make great winter decor.  I love the wrapped burlap and also the burlap runner down the center of the table.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.47.54 PMAmazon

Or how about this?  Little mossy pots with a taper candle in the center, all atop a metal tray.  Really simple, but textural, so the eye has a lot to feast itself on.

The most important thing to remember with winter table centerpieces, and, really, with decorating this time of year in general, is that the more layers and texture you have, the cozier it will be and the more interest you will have.  Bring things in from the outdoors, use your imagination, and have fun with this!  There is no way to create a bad centerpiece if you are inspired.

Beads: Fashion and Design

Good morning!

So, I watched my DVR recording of Downton Abbey on Monday (and loved it, by the way — what a great start to the season!), and obviously I am always struck by the fashion.  And the interior design.  Everything is over-the-top and completely inspiring, and I love the amount of detail in everything the characters wear, to everything that is sitting inside of the decorated rooms.  Incredible.

I always especially love Mary Crawley’s fashion — and Lady Edith’s is really beautiful, too, with a just-slightly edgy twist in everything she wears.  But I am always, always, always in love with the long beaded necklaces that Mary wears.  I always notice them and find myself wishing for a time-warp so that I could wear a fancy 1920’s dress with beads just like the ones she’s always wearing.

This got me thinking about her many necklaces and the surplus of ways to incorporate beads into your home.  Beads are great for texture and they add a little bit of luxe or whimsy depending on how you use them — just as they can add the same to an outfit.  Although Lady Mary tends to always look luxe, but you get my point.  🙂

Winter Wreaths

Good morning!  I hope Monday was good to you.  That can always be the hardest day of the week, right?

I was perusing my Christmas Pinterest board and came across some really pretty winter wreaths that are perfect if you want to switch out that Christmas-y one for something a little less holly jolly until Valentine’s Day.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.21.00 PMThe Interior Collective

I just think this is so cute and this is the image that actual inspired this post.  I saw this and thought, “Wow.  Not in-your-face Christmas, but still festive.”

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.22.09 PMFlickr

This is really simple, and I appreciate that.  Aren’t we all trying to simplify after the Holidays?  I know I am.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.23.07 PMZsaZsa Bellagio

I love how this wreath is a slight push for Spring with the moss all over it, but there are still festive Winter elements to it that keep it current.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.24.08 PMMartha Stewart

Another three-wreath variation — this one slightly more sophisticated.  🙂  I just think this is so pretty.  I hope Martha has a DIY tutorial on her site for this because I want to do it!

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.25.08 PMElements of Style

I think this is my favorite so far.  Could it perhaps be the stripes?  Yes, yes, I think so.  😉

Do you still keep your wreath up this time of year?

Christmas Catching Up

Hey there, strangers.

It sure has been a while, and for good reason!  First of all, for the tail-end of November and almost the entire month of December, I was sick with what can only be described as The Plague.  The long story short is this:  IF you find yourself with a phlegmy cough, do not, I repeat, DO NOT wait more than a week to be seen.  Because you WILL become short of breath to the point that walking from one end of your bedroom to the other makes you sound like you just ran a half marathon; you WILL cough up blood over the course of the next several weeks as your hacking continues; and you WILL be prescribed an inhaler that makes you feel as though you just drank twenty cups of coffee in all of about five minutes.  No, it won’t be pleasant, and your doctor won’t be too pleased, either.

The icing on the cake is that this all started on the day my mother-in-law decided to put up her Christmas decorations.  The BEST day ever.  To get sick, apparently.  I was zhusing the ribbon on the dining room tree when I suddenly became very sweaty and started to black out, softly mumbling something along the lines of, “I need water.  I’m gonna vom.”

Yeah…

Anyway, after a long sickness that started to make me question whether my moment of death was fast-approaching, I am feeling much better and my coughing only happens when my throat is dry, which is normal for everyone, right?  So I’m better.  One-hundred percent.  Hallelujiah.

On top of THAT, I started a new job!  I have been in training, whether face-to-face or online for the whole of December, and technically my first real day is, well, today.  🙂 I’ve been studying my schedule and I really do think I can continue with this blog and I’m going to try because it is so fun for me.  It’s a creative outlet that I enjoy and that I want to foster, so let’s do this.  My goal is minimum three posts a week.  We’ll have fun.

Since I didn’t get to write about all of the beautiful Christmas decor in the house, I will share some pictures in this post, just of my favorites.  Also, forgive the crappy cell phone pictures — someday I will have a real camera and my picture-taking skills will impress the pants off of you.  Literally.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.09.07 PM

This is the foyer.  These trees are flocked and they have all sorts of crystal and white, glittery ornaments all over them.  Also owls, furry owls.  A lot of the crystal “ornaments” are actually prisms from chandeliers.  Really beautiful and a great idea!

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.09.48 PM

This tree is in the dining room/library.  My mother-in-law made most of the ornaments out of used books.  I should have gotten a close-up — it’s really something.  There are also frames on the tree filled with black and white family photos.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.10.23 PM

This is the only vignette I can semi-take credit for.  The idea — my mother-in-law’s.  I never really realized what a total perfection freak I am until I started putting this together.  It looks like it took me, what, five minutes?  Oh-ho-ho no.  I obsessed over this and moved things an 1/8th of an inch this way and that way and added too many ornaments but waaaaait no that’s too many and then how to distribute the pearls?  Messily?  Neatly?  Neatly and with maddening forethought while still trying to achieve the messy, I-threw-this-together-in-five-minutes look?  Yeah.  That’s it.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.10.57 PM

This is the brick room — my favorite room in the whole house.  We call it the brick room because the floor is made out of bricks.  I know, we’re really creative and clever.  This is where we open presents on Christmas morning.  The best and most lively room at Christmastime.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.11.32 PM

This tree is even prettier lit up, but, you know, cell phones.  There is gold mesh ribbon wrapped around paired with a feathery garland.  Red, gold, and some birds live on this tree.  I can’t really pick a favorite tree, but I think if I was forced to, I would choose this one.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.12.08 PM

Here’s the mantle.  That garland = large and in charge.  And heavy.  Really heavy.  My mother-in-law bought it and then filled it with ribbon, birds, tassels, etc. to make it look super full and garland-y.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.12.42 PM

Here’s a close-up.  And I love those stockings.  I want to wear them on my feet and go to a party, they are so pretty.

The other great thing about the month of December is that it is SAFFRON BUN SEASON!

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.13.33 PM

This is only half of the beautiful, glorious dough that we made and then made into buns.  I don’t have a picture of the finished buns because, well, we ate them all.

I have been making these with my mom and brother ever since I could walk.  They are a family tradition that goes way back, and it just doesn’t feel like Christmastime without them.

Finally, Christmas Day was a really special day with both of our families, and we both felt so blessed to be surrounded by so much love.  Especially with our new little nephew being a part of the festivities — it made it even more special.

I hope you all had a really wonderful Holiday season, no matter what you celebrate.  I’m looking forward to spending more time here in the coming year, and I can’t wait to share with you my love for design and decorating that runs so deep sometimes I can hardly breathe.  If there’s something you’d like to see here in the coming months, please feel free to e-mail me.  All of my contact information is in the tabs above.

Holiday Table: Gold Glam

Hey there, happy Friday!  Can you believe that by this time next week, Thanksgiving will be over?  I don’t even want to think about it…  In fact, I don’t know why I just said that…  Over the course of the next few weeks, I am going to be sharing some holiday table settings — I don’t know about you, but I love love love looking at inspiration images of tablescapes on Pinterest and such.  It gives me all sorts of fun ideas!  This table setting that I’m going to show you today is not necessarily Thanksgiving-themed, but it definitely passes for holiday flare.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.57.41 PM

I love red and gold so much, don’t you?  Now, I helped myself to my mother-in-law’s large selection of china which obviously made the beautification process pretty easy.  But I’ll show some simpler table settings in the coming weeks, too.  Thought I’d get the series kicked off with a punch!  🙂

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.58.59 PM

The first thing you’ll need is a table…  😉  I chose this one for today’s tablescape.  Now let’s start layering!

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.00.04 PM

A fun ruffled placemat, a red lacquered charger…

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.01.29 PM

Let that gold theme run wild!  I kept the top and bottom plate simple with a gold rim, and added a bit of pattern with the middle plate.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 9.02.18 PM

I used the red as a punch of color and distributed it in ways that it would pop.  I love how the black sort of punctuates the setting both at the bottom and very very top.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!  Turkey Day is on its way!!  🙂

A Very Simple Fall

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.52.36 PM

There’s not much I love more this time of year than simplicity… The season of “stuff” and “excess” is upon us, and really, is there anything more perfect than an overstuffed tree?  But as far as Fall is concerned, I am loving my mother-in-law’s small touches here and there.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.53.27 PM

So very pretty, capturing the natural and organic essence of the season!

More soon!

White Pumpkins

Good morning!  🙂  I hope you all had an awesome weekend.  I spent all of mine with family, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So…Fall decor.  I can’t not talk about it, given the season.  I have been seeing a ton of chic little white pumpkins all over Pinterest, and I gotta say, I love them!

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.33.18 PM.pngBabble

What’s not to love about them?  Especially these — how pretty are they with that orange stripeyness?

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.34.26 PMAmy Howard

A strategic pile of white and milky green pumpkins.  Makes my heart sing.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.35.34 PMSouthern Living

I love this vignette.  So much variety and texture here!  And those perfectly imperfect pumpkins make this that much more interesting.  Character is key for a layered effect!

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.36.45 PMThe Daily Basics

Oh yeah.  White gourds and leafy greens.  Super organic, modern, and unexpected.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.37.47 PMMyDomaine

I just think this is stunning and I’ve decided that this my favorite.  The whole flowers-in-a-pumpkin thing is a DIY I want to try.  But this is a striking color combination, no?

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.38.50 PMMartha Stewart

I think more than anything, Fall makes me want to decorate with tons of organic texture.  This tablescape does not fall short in that department!

Can I please have two favorites?  This is insane!!!

Hope you have had a great start to your week!

A Fall Wedding

Well, it’s hard to believe, but today is my three-year wedding anniversary!  It has been a great year, the best one yet, and we are so happy.  In honor of the day, I’m going to share some of the decor from our wedding!

For those who don’t know, we were married at a little coffee shop in the small town of Carefree.  In order to make sure that we could pull this off, we did hire a wedding planner for the logistical side of things and also the set-up.  But the design was a labor of love — with items and time donated by friends and family, lots of Pinterest-scouring, and figuring out ways to accomplish the look we wanted on a budget!

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.07.03 PM

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.07.48 PM

These signs were made by my sweet brother — he is quite the artist!  The chalkboards were purchased from Hobby Lobby, and the stands are from HomeGoods.  We opted out of a sit-down dinner and instead had a buffet with heavy appetizers.  We worked with a great catering company and they created a really diverse menu.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.08.50 PM

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.09.21 PM

Our theme was vintage-inspired, with lots of lace, silver accents, and pops of mustard yellow.  The wedding photos are of our grandparents and great-grandparents, as some have parted from this earth and could not be with us on the day.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.10.07 PM

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.10.43 PM

The tables were rented from a vendor and were wood with benches along either side.  The lace runners were all ordered from Etsy!  We had different styles and sizes for each table.  Candles, vases, etc. were zhushed by my mom or purchased from JoAnn’s or another craft store.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.11.32 PM

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.12.03 PM

Our favors were little jars of my mom’s famous homemade cranberry sauce…just in time for Thanksgiving.  I still can’t believe she did this for me.  She packaged them up so cute while I was freaking out and having many a Bride-Zilla moment as the day neared; and we had a stamping party at my cousin’s house to make the little tags.  It was really fun.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.12.46 PM

This was the little sign we had near the guest book.  My sister-in-law donated her time and efforts to designing our wedding invitation, and also a custom logo.  We used it on everything!

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.13.28 PM

Our cake was on the smaller side but we had plenty more on a sheet cake in the kitchen!  I really wanted it to be frosted rustically, and our baker did just that!  The “We Do” birds were also an Etsy find, and the flowers were added from extras that we had.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.14.14 PM

As the night turned chilly, we had several baskets of these fleece blankets around that were welcome to guests.  These were purchased from Walgreens, I think, and tied with pretty ribbon!

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.15.00 PM

There were many of these mini chandeliers hanging from the trees.  They were donated by my mother-in-law, and they also made an appearance at my sis-in-law’s wedding the year before!

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.15.41 PM

And finally, at the end of the night, we had a sparkler send-off that was really awesome.  This was a table that was set up all night, so our peeps could be ready when the time came!

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 8.16.21 PM

Thanks for taking a walk down memory lane with me this morning!  And happy anniversary to my best friend.  🙂
