Memorial Day 2016

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 7.02.49 PM

First and foremost, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the men and woman who have given their life for our freedoms.  Our day-to-day lives would be so much different without the bravery and selflessness that our soldiers exhibit — for all of us.  We are so blessed to live in the country we live in.

It’s been a while since I’ve written here!  Things have been a mix of good and difficult, sometimes both in the same day.  My amazing Gramma passed last month and shortly thereafter, my husband’s Grandmom passed.  There has been a lot of loss, a lot of stress, and a lot of uncertainty.

Turning towards each other and our faith has been a lifesaver for my hubby and I.  This has been a difficult couple of years for us, and we’re looking forward to brighter things ahead.  On the blogging front, I have really been trying to limit my work hours to daytime so that I can be finished by 6:00.  That’s taken me away from this blog that I enjoy so much, but I really miss it.  I feel like I really want to find a place for it!  So I will try.  🙂

I am so inspired by the projects that I see all over the internet, on Pinterest, on my favorite blogs…  It used to make me sad because I don’t have my own home that I can experiment with, so much so that I couldn’t read the blogs because I just felt so empty.  But now I am feeling excited and inspired again as the time nears for us to have our own home and it makes me want to read and Pin and Google ideas again.  I’ve missed that.

I love to create and bake and feel inspired.  I think we all love to feel inspired.  I want to rediscover that part of myself…it has been missing for too long!

With this blog, I hope to write more and create more.  And I can start that now.  There are some organizational projects I want to do with some items that I have, there are crafts that I can do, there are things I can bake…  I don’t have to wait!  I think that is what I am realizing.  I have been depriving myself of all of these things that used to give me joy because I would think to myself, “When you have your OWN house you can do these things…”  But I don’t think it needs to be that way.

I think I am just realizing that right now.  We will have our own space soon enough, but in the meantime, I have to find my joy.  And I have to make it a point to do that every day.

Easy DIY Marble Tray

A couple of weeks ago, I had a DIY night with a friend.  She had some projects she wanted to do for her wedding that is coming up, but I thought I would make something for our casita.  It had been so long since I did an actual project — not just decorating.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.58.45 PM

This tray is seriously the world’s easiest project.  It takes five minutes to complete — the hard part is looking for all of the ‘ingredients’ at the hardware store!  We had quite the time trying to locate the stone and the hardware and the GLUE… don’t even get me started on the glue.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.59.15 PM

All you need for this is a marble tile, rubber stickers for the bottom (all four corners), hardware of your choice, and E6000 glue.  Oh, and painter’s tape plus a ruler for measuring and marking where you want your hardware to go.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.59.45 PM

Can you believe that I found these at Home Depot?  I’m lucite-crazed so these were right up my alley.  🙂

Around the House

Well, it’s been a while.  I didn’t expect to be away from the blog for so long, but two weeks ago this past Sunday my amazing Gramma passed away, and what a roller coaster it has been since.

There has been a lot of family time, a lot of reminiscing, a lot of tears…  We’ve come together and experienced all of this together.  In all of its sadness, it has also been beautiful.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.54.45 PM

I’ve gotten lots of snuggles from this little guy, and also my wonderful husband who has been by my side since I received the news.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.55.16 PM

My Gramma loved to paint, and this is something she did some years ago… With the dementia came more abstract artwork that is still pretty and special, just different.  She loved to paint flowers.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.55.46 PM

Sort of a metaphor for life… just as some of my orchid blooms have withered away, there have been new blooms this past week or two.  I love that.

Fifth Wall Friday

Good morning and Happy Friday!  🙂

An amazing and beautiful sight…a literal thatched garden on the ceiling, right above you as you dine in!  Furniture and floor are simple white — your eyes are drawn upward to the magic that hangs over your head.

Have you had one of those weeks recently where you just can’t catch up on sleep?  That’s where I’ve been since Tuesday.  My sweet doggy woke up early-early that morning with tummy problems and ever since then my whole sleep schedule has been off.  Needless to say, I am looking forward to a weekend with a few extra hours of rest and the occasional coffee or two with my husband so that we can enjoy this blessed Spring weather!

Have a wonderful weekend… 🙂

Two Beds, One Room

Good morning!  We’re almost to Friday!  🙂

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a big bedroom with two small beds.  Of course I love the whole master bedroom thing, too, but for secondary bedrooms, gotta love the two-bed scenario.  It’s great for kids, guests, and your vacation home.  With people coming and going, two beds in at least one of the secondary bedrooms is an awesome thing.

Pay attention to color distribution when you’re decorating a room like this.  Consider it more important than ever to choose a color scheme and stick to it.  These rooms have a lot going on in them and usually a lot of furniture.  By keeping your color story cohesive, your eyes will have places to rest and the effect will be a calming aesthetic.

Also — symmetry = your BFF.

Kate Spade Lighting

Good morning!  Welcome to Wednesday.  🙂

At this point, Kate Spade home decor is nothing new, but what is pretty new is their gorgeous and limited collection of lighting.  I will be honest and say that the fixtures are a bit of an investment as far as price goes, but I am loving the small variety of styles!

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.25.44 PM

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.26.14 PM

I think that my favorite of all of these lighting choices are these simple round table lamps, which surprises me!  There’s a subtle style that goes with this modern fixture — it’s really understated but beautiful because of that.  The brass detailing is my favorite part, especially paired with that milky white.

The tall and slightly skinny black, white, and gold collection of lamps is funky and reads trendier than the other designs.  BUT the colors are classic, so it’s not like buying something that will go out of style with the seasons.  I love these on a desk or entry table.

And for the more ornate aesthetic, these seriously do not disappoint.  Think of these fixtures as the jewelry in your room — the show-stopper piece, the source of the wow-factor.  I’m so surprised that these are not my favorite of all of the choices.  I’m still really partial to the first style.

Which one is your favorite?

Pantone 2016 Colors of the Year

Good morning!  I hope you’ve eased into your week and that Monday was good to you.  I’ve been meaning to write this post for a really long time… the topic has been on my calendar several times but has been switched around with other things.  Today we’re talking about Pantone’s 2016 Colors of the Year!

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.15.26 PMPantone

By now you have most likely heard all about Rose Quartz and Serenity.  This is the first time that Pantone has released two colors of the year, as a married inspirational pair.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.16.18 PMOriginal Source Unknown

I love that you can find these colors in nature — think sunsets (especially of the Arizona variety), flowers and other plants, and leaves like you see above.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.17.02 PMArchitectural Digest

Rose Quartz is such a pretty blush pink, don’t you think?  The best blush.

And then there’s Serenity, which is sort of icy but evokes a calm feeling and reads intensely ethereal.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.18.48 PMLuxe

Pantone made a cultural statement of sorts upon releasing these two colors, commenting on the world’s need for peace, equality, and balance.  It’s interesting that something as simple and yet complex as color can create a platform for a discussion about things that our world faces these days.

Bringing these colors to life in your own home…  Use paint or another form of wall covering for a floor-to-ceiling application; furniture if you’re okay with a pricier investment; or accessories if you’re just looking to celebrate these trending colors without making a big design decision.  Personally, pillows are my favorite way to try out a popular color.

If you’re looking for other colors to pair with Rose Quartz and Serenity, look for greens, purple, yellow, a variety of pinks (you really can’t go wrong there), and deep browns.  One of my design teachers always said that purple is such a versatile color because you can pretty much pair anything with it.  When in doubt, pair these colors with purple.

I hope you have a great Tuesday!

Around the House

Happy Monday, friends.  How was your weekend?  I worked a lot but had some nice family time.  On Saturday night my husband and I went out to a fancy dinner with my mom-in-law, and then on Sunday we really just got some good relaxation time in.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.08.40 PM

I was super happy yesterday because Grey and I went to Trader Joe’s for some fresh flowers.  Do you love TJ’s just for that reason, too?  This pretty orchid came home with us and it’s in our casita now.  It’s so happy!

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.09.12 PM

I love a made bed.  There’s nothing quite like crawling into a pretty bed at night.  I always try to make it.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.09.44 PM

We bought these tulips at Trader Joe’s, too.  I put them in the brick room since I do a lot of work at this table and our Easter centerpiece is all gone now.  I think tulips are one of my favorite flowers because they are SO simple, but their simplicity is what’s so beautiful about them.  They are an effortless flower.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.10.17 PM

This little Spring birdy is in the back hallway.  He’s been up for a while — since I put the other Easter decorations up.  A silver bowl, some crunchy moss, a nest, and a bird, all layered.  I like him.  🙂

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 6.10.50 PM

If you live in Arizona, you probably know all about My Sister’s Closet.  Seriously the BEST consignment store ever — I find so many awesome things there.  I think I’m going to live in these this Summer.  I love a fun sandal!  Shortly after Grey and I got home my mom-in-law told us that we’re all going on a beach vacation, so these will definitely be joining me.  That’s what I call timing!  😉

I hope you all have the best day and that you’re easing into your week!

Fifth Wall Friday

Good morning, everyone.  Welcome to Friday!  🙂

It seems we have a new take on skylights!  I’m loving so much about this space, and it is so simple.  Industrial meets rustic; old meets modern — there is lots of inspiration to be had here in such an uncomplicated interior.

This week was a busy one for me — one of those where on paper and in my scheduling book it doesn’t look like much, but I feel a little run ragged.  I have a busy weekend ahead, but I’m hoping to slow down a bit next week and catch my breath.

Happy Happy Weekend!

Easter 2016 Wrap-Up

Hey there, friends.  I hope that you all had a wonderful Easter if you were celebrating.  It’s a beautiful time of rebirth and I am even more aware of it this year than last year.  Feels good.  Our holiday was spent with lots of family and too much chocolate, of course.  🙂

The bunny banner on the fireplace came down today, but I’m thinking that the rest is pretty generically Spring-y so it’ll stay up for a while.  I thought I would show off just a few pretty little areas of the house today that have me Spring happy.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.46.21 PM

This little bird is sitting on the breakfast bar in the kitchen.  The moss is drying out and probably won’t make it for another year, but that’s okay.  My mother-in-law has a cupboard filled with old silver, milk glass, and fancy dishes, and that’s where I got this little dish from.  I think he looks so regal sitting there!

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.47.55 PM

The roses blooming outside have me so happy — I have shared a couple of pictures on my Instagram account.  They’re pretty inspiring and really perpetuate the whole rebirth spirit of the season.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.48.45 PM

Milk glass just screams Spring to me and I am loving playing around with these pretties.  I filled this shallow bowl up with Easter candy from our baskets.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.50.37 PM

I updated our Peeps centerpiece in the Brick Room because those flowers were getting pretty yucky!  These are the red roses from the backyard.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.51.27 PM

You know me and moss — BFFs.  This is just some easy filler in this hurricane.  Spring all over the place!  🙂
