Around the House

Hey there and happy Monday.  I, for one, am so happy to have a new and fresh start.  Last week was a trying one on many levels and so I certainly viewed today as a new beginning of sorts.  Praying for a smoother week!

This blog post title really should be A Picture of My Dog and Two Delicious Foods, because that’s all I’ve got for you today.  😉  Nothing in the way of home decor inspiration — it is safe to say that I’ve had blinders on for the past seven to eight days and have not been living with the ability to see much that inspires me.  BUT, let’s change that this week, okay?  I’m going to give it my all.

My loving furry companion never fails me and he has been spending so much time by my side, making me feel better.  Same with my non-furry love, my husband, who’s been making sure that I feel well taken care of.  These boys are the best.

This epic salad is one of my favorite meals lately — I’ve had it countless times.  It’s a chicken caesar salad with shaved parmesan cheese; but the dressing is from Target and is a yogurt-based caesar so it cuts the calories more than in half.  I make up for it with the cheese, though, lol.  😉  One of the biggest salad tips I can give you is to salt and pepper throughout the assembling process much like you would any other meal that you make.  It adds just another layer to the flavor and really elevates the experience, even with storebought dressing.

A fabulous lunch-time snack that I am loving — crusty bread that has been toasted to perfection, pesto, burrata, and smoked salmon.  Honestly, this is my favorite thing right now.  The kind of meal that you eat and then can’t wait to have again the next day.

Have a great week, everyone!

Summer Hallway

I’ve mentioned before that during the summer months, my in-laws’ seasonal decorating aesthetic is all about simplicity.  Our major design ingredient is the seashell — a versatile element obviously varying in size, which makes for perfect vignettes!

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 10.21.04 PM

The hallway leading to the back of the house is lovely (especially with those windows I mentioned yesterday), and this table is one of my favorites.  Simple tabletop decor always graces it, with a few nods to whatever current season we are experiencing.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 10.21.42 PM

See just the few little seashells that make this space summer-ready?  I love the artwork, too — drawings by my sis-in-law from her college days.  Every space in this house is the perfect mix of high-meets-low, creating a design that looks altogether luxury and high-end.  Antiques and heirlooms mixed with HomeGoods finds.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 10.22.23 PM

You can never have enough sand on-hand this time of the year.  Just as pinecones are to fall and eggs are to spring, sand (and seashells, of course!) are what summer decorating is all about.  🙂  Layer decor with texture, height, and scale for  the best mix.

Around the House

Happy Monday!  How was your weekend?  We enjoyed ours but it is so hot here and at this point, I am over it.  BUT, too bad for me because we’re really not going to get much of a break in temperature until mid-September.  We’ve all just got to deal with it and also commiserate with each other!  🙂  The weather is something we’ve all got in common — it’s hot for everyone!

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 10.12.44 PM

My mom-in-law has been bringing home fresh flowers every week and creating a little arrangement on the breakfast bar, and this is her newest bouquet.  🙂  It’s little details like this that just make my day.  Also, a little secret for flower longevity is to add three ice cubes into your vessel per day.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 10.13.21 PM

On Saturday Greyson was working and I slept in but once I was up and ready, I decided to head out to a coffee shop that I love and read some blogs — one of my favorite things to do!  🙂  This particular coffee shop has an amazing selection of homemade baked goods and I just couldn’t pass up this pretty cupcake.  White cake with lemon cream cheese frosting…it was so good.  I was so excited when I took my first bite and realized that it wasn’t buttercream!  I’m not a buttercream person, but cream cheese frosting?  I’m all over that!

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 10.14.19 PM

Like I said, it has been so hot, so all I really do is view the patio as I’m traveling up and down the hallway leading to the back of the house.  The hallway has two giant windows and I love seeing all the pretty out there.  Once a day I straighten up a bit — fluff the pillows, etc. — just in case someone has been brave enough to be out there.  Occasionally I pick up Kuma’s poop because one of his favorite spots to go is by the window, lol, and no one wants to see that!

I got the prettiest orchid for our casita at Trader Joe’s yesterday.  There really is no better place to buy an orchid — I only paid $12.99 for this one and it is huge!  It came in a terracotta pot but I switched it out for this white one I already had.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 10.16.00 PM

This is the first thing I see when I walk in the door of our room, and I just love that happy orchid greeting me.  The window has a beautiful view out to the pool (and the gorgeous red pool loungers!) so the plant gets the perfect amount of sunshine during the day.

I hope you had the best day!  I’ve got some summery vignettes to show you this week that I’m excited to share.  🙂

Wiggle Chair

Frank Gehry is one of my favorite mid-century architects, so it is no surprise that he also designed one of my favorite mid-century chairs — the Wiggle Chair!  Part of Gehry’s Easy Edges series during the years of 1969-1973, this design gained him notoriety for its whimsical appearance and inventive construction.  It is made out of layered corrugated cardboard, which is flexible to work with but also strong and durable — ideal for furniture, as it turns out!  The Wiggle Chair and Easy Edges series showcases Gehry’s self-proclaimed “fundamental concern with manipulating basic materials in unconventional ways to produce objects that are functional yet also visually striking.

This chair looks fabulous and is semi-expected in modern interiors, but paired with extremely classic interior details, the contrast is stunning — plus, you know I’m all about the mix.  🙂

Lisa Corti Textiles

If flowers and geometric patterns are your jam, then I have something you will love.  Enter Lisa Corti, an incredible textile designer who conceptualizes everything from tapestries to bedding, clothing to shoes.  There really is no limit on what she can do with her stunning trademark patterns, and she clearly knows it!  🙂  Think of the style of her textiles as a more youthful MacKenzie Childs (although I love those designs, too!), blending floral motifs, geometric lines and shapes, and jewel tones.  She designs everything in her seventeenth-century studio in Milan (sounds fabulous, doesn’t it?), and then the textiles are handmade in India by local artisans using ancient printing methods.

Corti’s inspiration comes from ornamental Florentine Medici frescoes and the simpler geometry of Nagaland shawls.  Use these textiles as artwork, room accessories, or become a boho-chic goddess while romping around in one of her dress designs.  Simply put, this is a line that packs the perfect unforgettable punch.

Around the House

Good morning and Happy Monday!

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.41.29 PM

This is pretty much exactly how I am feeling this AM.  Last week just sort of fell apart on me.  Do you ever have weeks like that?  I’ve been kind of keeping track of when those weeks happen and trying to figure out why they happen, and a lot of it has to do with a lack of preparation during my weekend for the coming week.  I have always been this way!  Trying to find a balance between ultra-preparedness and just a general feeling of being ‘ready’ for whatever the next week has in store.  It’s a process.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.42.08 PM

Life has been pretty crazy and chaotic lately with a lot of change on the horizon.  I’m finding myself feeling a little bit drained but also hopeful and excited.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.42.41 PM

On a lighter note, I’m very much enjoying all of the little summer vignettes around the house.  My mom-in-law and I worked together, adding things here and there when the mood struck us, and each of the main rooms has a small touch of the season.  Keeping things simple before the abundance of the Fall and Christmas seasons where decor gets taken up a huge notch.  I’ll show you more of these spaces this week.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.43.18 PM

Enjoy your Monday and if you’re like me, revel in the fresh start.  And if today doesn’t go your way, remember that tomorrow is a new day, too.  Another fresh start.  We get one of those every single day.  🙂

Mae West Lips Sofa

When I was in school studying interior design, we had a whole unit where we discussed all sorts of iconic furniture.  This was definitely one of my favorite times in school — learning about the designers, the history behind each piece, why these pieces are still popular today, etc.!  By far, one of the pieces that I loved the most (and still do!) is the Mae West Lips Sofa.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.34.28 PMArchitectural Digest

This is a surrealist sofa made of wood and satin (or, of course, the original was), designed by Salvador Dali.  Isn’t it fun?!  I don’t think there are many people that could hate this sofa…at the very least there is a certain amount of appreciation that can be felt for it and Dali, too, since this design was incredibly ahead of its time.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.35.26 PMSource Unknown — Model Lisa Fonssagrives

You may be wondering where the idea for such a sofa originated from!  The answer is that Salvador Dali was much inspired by the lips of actress Mae West in 1937, and so what better way to appreciate those lips than to create something.  He didn’t ever intend it to be a functional or produced piece of furniture.

Studio Designs

But then 1972 came along, and with that year, so did an Italian Designer Group called Studio 65.  They created an updated version of Dali’s original design and named it the Marilyn Bocca Sofa, after Marilyn Monroe, of course.  This is really the piece that became produced for mid-century homes and became iconic!

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.37.51 PMElle

I love the whimsical and fun feel that this sofa adds to any interior.  Although you’ll see this piece most commonly in a more contemporary setting, can we just take a moment and appreciate how amazing this looks in such a classic aesthetic?  Such a stark contrast, but absolutely perfect!

Square Subway Tile Trend

It’s always fun to see what trends are on the horizon for interior design — what is popular now, what is coming back in style, etc.  Square subway tile is something that I have noticed is gaining ground in the trend department, but I love it because it’s not altogether trendy… Just a new take on an old classic.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.18.12 PMHomes to Love

This tile shape and style is perfect because it will lend itself to any application — traditional, contemporary, and everywhere in between.  It adds just the right amount of modern to keep things feeling young and fresh.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.19.48 PMRemodelista

Do you see the interesting texture these tiles add, while still keeping a subtle vibe?  That’s talent!  😉  Using white grout will obviously keep things really soft, while darker grout will have a more impactful aesthetic.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.20.48 PMOriginal Source Unknown

Keeping the tiles applied on a grid is one option if your goal is a more streamlined look, however offsetting the tiles like the above photo is a great way to add a little more visual pattern to your space.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.25.05 PMElle Decoration

Use these neutral tiles to complement a focal point — like a really great and special inset on a kitchen backsplash, or floor tile with pizzazz.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.25.58 PMBHG

And these square tiles don’t only look awesome in white — neutrals look perfect, especially against white cabinetry, which is nothing new, but still!  I love the mix-and-match of the shapes in this kitchen backsplash, and how there are classic, industrial, and modern elements all in this one vignette photo.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.27.44 PMArchilovers

Don’t forget a small application, too — how cool does this look?  I feel like the smaller the tiles get, the more modern they look.  Especially all on a grid like this.  But I love it!

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.30.36 PMHouse of Turquoise

Obviously a little color never hurt anyone, either.  🙂  Have fun with these glazed colored subway tiles as accents in your space.  A little goes a long way!

Around the House

Happy Monday!

This past weekend was so great…one of those perfect weekends with the best combination of busy and relaxed, family and friends.  Greyson had the whole weekend off so we really savored that and spent a lot of time together.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.10.53 PM

On Saturday, I decided to make us a little romantic dinner, complete with a fun table setting.  I used to set special tables for us all the time, even if it was just for Tuesday night pizza — it’s one of the ways that I love on him.  🙂

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.11.31 PM

Aren’t those big green leaves cool?  I decided to use fancier china for this meal because I was trying to make it extra special, so I found these plates in the cabinet that holds some precious things.  They are beautiful and perfect for Summer, in my opinion.  My mom-in-law has a giant stack of chargers, and I always love to add these because they just give the whole table setting a simple something extra.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.12.06 PM

You could say that we had a tomato theme going on with the dinner that night, although each way was different.  I made this kale salad, subbing goat cheese for ricotta, and red beets for golden.  It was amazing.  Once you try grilled kale, it ruins it for you any other way!  It’s amazing.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.12.58 PM

We had a good amount of crusty bread already available to us, so I threw together this panini.  Mozzarella cheese, heirloom tomato (salt + pepper it a bit before you toss it on the sandwich!), basil pesto, and some homemade tomato jam that my sister-in-law made, which added the perfect spicy-sweetness to the sandwich.

I’m making a conscious effort to take everything one day at a time lately, and I’m finding myself feeling more inspired than I have in so long.  Looking around, taking everything in, life is good!

Hoping you have a great week!

Treasures

I’m a sentimental person by nature.  I have a hard time figuring out which birthday cards to keep (so I end up keeping all of them); little pieces of jewelry that I no longer wear have memories attached to them, so I can’t let go of them; even little notes that my parents used to write to me and stick on my bathroom mirror are still in my box of special things.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.01.53 PM

When we moved this past time, I purged a lot.  I let go of so many things, things that I realized, as I was packing up our life, didn’t mean anything to me.  I had so much “stuff.”  So much excess.  Even in our little apartment, it was filled with things that didn’t hold meaning.  Things that cluttered my view and made me feel overwhelmed.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.02.30 PM

Since we moved in with my in-laws, I haven’t bought very much decor at all.  In fact, I think my home-related purchases are limited to the throw pillows that I blogged about a few weeks ago.  Which is why, on our trip to Oceanside, I was so excited by little things to take home — little treasures.  Like the rocks that my husband would bring me while I was sitting in my chair by the beach.  And the random shell, too.  I piled these things on the chair next to me and brought them with me at the end of the day, tucking them into a bag with tissue paper for the trip home.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 9.03.07 PM

And this little treasure.  A tiny vase made out of Oceanside sand and acrylic, found in a local shop called Reap & Sow.  Made by a resident artisan.  They all were different but I was so drawn to this one.

The Diptyque candle was a Valentine’s Day gift from Greyson — one of those perfect gifts melding both the ‘thoughtful’ and ‘little-luxury’ categories together.  The kind of thing that you wouldn’t typically buy for yourself (oye, the guilt), but that makes even something so simple — like lighting a candle — special.  And the candle snuffer I found in a vintage store while shopping with Greyson for my birthday just over the weekend.  It is heavy and brass and from a time long before me.  I love that.

It’s little things like this that make me realize why it is so important to love everything that I bring into my space.  The feeling I get when I see all of these meaningful treasures displayed on the tray that I made myself makes me so happy.  It’s like a pile of memories.  The items are the symbols — the memories are the real treasures.
