Easter In the Dining Room

Good morning, and Happy Monday to you!  🙂

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.37.05 PM

I hope you had a great weekend.  I am so happy for the new week — a fresh start.  Last week was hard on many levels for me.  It feels good to start over with a new Monday.  🙂

Spring is all over the place now in Arizona and I am loving it.  Aren’t these tulips pretty?  I can’t wait for them to open up.  The roses in the backyard are blooming and there are even a couple of quail eggs in a little nest in a planter outside, so we’re on baby watch.  Besides Christmastime, this is the best time of the year.  Lots of life all around us.

I can’t believe Easter is this coming weekend!  I’m sharing the decorations in the dining room today.  Just little touches here and there — my favorite.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.38.11 PM

Can you spot the sleeping bunny on the bookshelf?  He looks pretty cozy up there.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.38.45 PM

I bought that little chalkboard at Target — it was in the dollar section.  They’re really upping their game lately, I think.  It’s hard to go to Target and not find something cute in that section.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.39.18 PM

This was an easy little centerpiece.  Remember the Valentine’s Day arrangement that was here before?  I just switched out the dried roses for eggs.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.39.52 PM

Here is another really simple little idea.  A cake plate, moss, eggs, and a ceramic bunny.  Can you tell that moss is a hot commodity around here?

Easter Foyer

Hey there.  It’s only Wednesday and this week has been a trying one.  Lots of feeling like I can’t catch up…and that I never will.  But I am hanging in there and wrapping up some projects — also looking forward to the weekend.  😉

I decorated for Easter and Spring a couple of weeks ago but so far haven’t shown a lot of our vignettes!  Today I’m sharing the little festive touches of the season in the foyer.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.31.56 PM

I just spruced up the items that already live here all the time — the candles, vintage books, and the pot.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.32.34 PM

Moss is an all-important ingredient in a Spring display.  It’s the best filler!

That’s an egg wreath that I just rested the pot on…but then there was a space between the two.  A little bit of moss does the trick.  🙂

Fifth Wall Friday

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.27.37 PMArchDaily

Imagine that you are walking through this bright and white hallway, and you look up and see this split and spindly tree in all its beautiful and stark glory.  That would be a good day.

Thanks so much for sticking with me all week on this blog.  This is the first week I’ve posted five times in I don’t even know how long.  It was hard, since I still had a full schedule with outside design work, but I feel accomplished and satisfied that I worked hard and was present.  This little blog is a creative outlet for me that lets me explore different ideas and yes, even show off my own little vignettes and holiday bits and pieces.  It brings me joy.

Have a great weekend!

Tasteful Neon

I honestly never thought that I would write about this.  Neon has sort of always struck me as one of those tacky color intensities… but I found myself being drawn to more and more interiors with either a little neon, or in some cases even a lot of it.  There are ways to keep it tasteful, though — let’s not get crazy here and paint every wall a neon hue.  You will not learn that from this blog.  😉

Furniture Accents — One Stand-Out Piece

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.04.09 PMArchitectural Digest

Think of this piece as the star of your room.  This is a great opportunity to select something both wild in color and in shape.  By going bold with this, tone down the rest of the room to accommodate.

Grounding Black + White

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.05.15 PMArchitectural Digest

In most cases black is the grounding factor in a room; but I think that with a small dose of neon, the effect is reversed and the bold color actually grounds the space.  Especially with lots of pattern to be found, like this little kitchen dining area.

Tile

Have fun with your tile and introduce a little neon with your kitchen backsplash and bathroom hard surfaces.  I wouldn’t say that this is a timeless look, but if you’re wanting to showcase personality and whimsy, neon is a great way to go.

Architectural Accents

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.08.08 PMHome Adore

Highlight those architectural elements with an accent of neon.  The perfect little pop of color — think shelves, moldings, doors, etc.  Anywhere you can get just that little edge.

Your Fifth Wall

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.09.09 PMHouzz

This is me harpin’ on how I don’t want you to forget your fifth wall!  😉  Your ceiling is the perfect spot for a splash of neon.  Keep other colors much less saturated, but don’t be afraid to still have a mix of color, pattern, and texture.  Accent your neon vibes with a piece of jewelry for your ceiling.

Lighting

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.10.14 PMHouse Beautiful

When in doubt, neon lighting is a safe way to play it.  Table lamps, pendants, sconces, little chandeliers (or big ones!) — this is a very easy way to implement this element without spending a lot of money or making a huge statement with a more or less permanent design fixture.

Distribution of Color

Color distribution is a topic we’ll talk more about another day, but basically I’m referencing evenly distributing color around a space so that it is pleasing to the eye.  Whether you use different neon colors or the bright yellow we all think of, this is a beautiful way to showcase this trend.

Easter Fireplace Decor

Hey there.  🙂  I scored big at the Target dollar section with a couple of cute banners for the fireplace.  There were only two left!  It’s like they were waiting for me.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 4.58.18 PM

The tails on the bunnies are little pom-poms.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 4.58.57 PM

No tape or any securing agent required — I just tucked the ends of the banner underneath the items already decorating the mantel.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 4.59.29 PM

Isn’t this bunny so cute?  I love her dress.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.00.03 PM

Her basket is empty, but I filled it up with some paper present filler and just put the moss on top — I didn’t want to fill the whole basket with a Spring decorating hot commodity.  The little eggs are speckled and pastel and I love them.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.00.35 PM

I’ve mentioned before that this is my favorite room in the whole house.  It’s just cozy!  I start every morning in here.

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 5.01.09 PM

On another note, these flowers are loving this spot and the couple of ice cubes I throw in there every day!  They’re makin’ me happy.

Modern Wine Storage

I’m not the biggest wine-drinker there ever was.  But that definitely doesn’t mean that I don’t love looking at pretty wine storage!  I think that if there is one room that I would design for myself in my dream house that would be almost entirely unnecessary, it would be a wine room.  Like, I would have it just to have it.  My taste in decorating for myself renders more traditional, but today I thought it would be fun to look at modern wine storage.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 10.19.53 PMHome Bunch

First and foremost — a wine room can be anything.  It can be a room where you sit down and enjoy your glass (or two).  It can be a room just for storing the goods.  Heck, it can be a closet.

The Wine Room

For a modern wine room, you’re going to want to pay very closet attention to your materials that make up the details of your design.  Think sleek metals, like shiny brass and silver, glass shelving, and large glass doors or encasements.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 10.22.37 PMHome Bunch

Another thing — lighting!  Use spotlights or wall lights to highlight textures, or a great chandelier or pendant light to add a little jewelry to your fifth wall.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 10.23.34 PMHome Bunch

A word about wood — darker wood tones generally lend well to a contemporary-modern style, while textural or colored laminates and woods swing toward the sexy-mod vibe.  It all depends on the look you’re going for.  Darker wood tones can be transitional, too.  Mix and match your materials and finishes — don’t be matchy-matchy.

Think outside the box — storage for cigars, a flooring design made entirely out of wine corks…  Modern wine storage = a place to have some fun.  It’s a bonus room!  Give it some personality.

A Lesson In Perfection

Happy Monday!

I’ve been meaning to write a post like this for a while.  Based on the day I had yesterday, putting up the Spring and Easter decor, I think that it’s now appropriate.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 10.08.45 PM

Pinterest is an amazing tool, but it also has the tendency to make us feel inferior.  There are always going to be better houses, better centerpieces, better items in which to decorate with, better, better, better…  I found the inspiration for this centerpiece on a blog that I won’t name, but they made it look so easy — like hey, I just magically threw some Peeps into the bowl and shoved some flowers in and it looked perfect.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 10.09.20 PM

So imagine my frustration and confusion when I buy four packs of Peeps and a bundle of flowers and excitedly begin to try and execute this, just like the picture and the easy “I just threw it together” sentiment, and it doesn’t work?  What’s wrong with me?!  Why can I never get it right?!  Like creating the perfect centerpiece and doing it all — and doing it all well — is life and death.  I dissolved.

I was duped by Pinterest.  And I let it say something about me.  I let the fact that this didn’t come easy for me dictate the way I felt about myself.  And then my loving husband pulled me out of the spiral.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 10.09.59 PM

He pointed out some valid arguments.  My favorite one was the obvious (but not obvious to me at the time) fact that the blogger I was trying to copy had different tools than I have.  A larger trifle dish?  A smaller vase?  The other way around?  Variables.  All variables.  He also drove home the point that I am too hard on myself… something I know but am working on.  And I think that it’s so easy for all of us to be too hard on ourselves these days — especially with social media and the internet.

Sometimes I feel like the expectations we put on ourselves are too high.  We want to have a beautiful home with flawless decor, a hot dinner on the table with a homemade pie baking in the oven, all while having the best blown-out hair ever and a designer outfit.  It’s a lot of pressure we put on ourselves.

And so relating it back to DIY and decorating bloggers, I appreciate the beautiful finished result photos that we all feel inspired by.  I really do.  But transparency… I appreciate that even more.

SO, you will need sprinkles.  Because the sides of those Peeps, when pulled apart, are hella sticky.  You’ve got to coat the sides in sprinkles that have been ground up very finely.  Use a mortar and pestle.  And when you fill your little trifle dish, put a smaller vase in the center for the flowers.  Make sure it is in there before you start adding the Peeps.  And then gently fill the trifle bowl around the vase, moving the vase to fit the candy in as you go.  Don’t worry about squishing them a little — they’re marshmallows, after all.  All of this figured out by the brilliant man I love.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 10.10.52 PM

If you buy two bouquets of flowers, you’ll have enough for a little coffee table centerpiece.  Or, you might not — depending on the size of your Peep centerpiece.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 10.11.24 PM

Drop in a couple of ice cubes every morning in your centerpieces to refresh the water.

And be kind to yourself.

Chinoiserie

As far as my relationship with European design goes, we’re basically BFFs.  There were so many subjects that I loved while I was going to school for interior design; but my most favorite times were when we discussed European design influences.  Enter: Chinoiserie.

The word ‘chinoiserie’ is ridiculously fun to say, and almost as chic as its shortened version, ‘Chinois,’ which means ‘Chinese.’  Yes, we’re talking Europe’s take on the classic elements of Chinese design, architecture, and even literature and performing arts.  It seems the Europeans were intent on copying this style, with their own flair for the drama, of course.

The elements are considered to be feminine, and in my experience people either love or hate the style altogether.  Chances are if you are a fan of French design and especially the Rococo period, you love Chinois (almost) as much as I do. 😉

Ways to Implement Chinoiserie (AKA…now we look at some pretty pictures)

Murals

Obviously not for the faint of heart, this has huge impact and requires a big commitment.  But if you’re Chinoiserie’s Number Two Fan (I’m Number One, heh), then this will not seem scary to you — only the epitome of style!

Using a wallpaper with one consistent pattern is a little bit busier for the eye, but invokes a feeling rather than a story.  The great thing about Chinoiserie is that it is a pretty neutral design element — it can swing from traditional to ultra-contemporary depending on what you pair it with in a space.  It’s a very specific but also very versatile pattern.

Furniture and Soft Goods/Accents

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 9.57.24 PMVeranda

There’s nothing more beautiful than this secretary.  I’m sorry, there’s just not.  This is literally my DREAM piece of furniture.  Try Chinoiserie on for size with gorgeous statements like this, or with soft goods and accents like pillows or draperies.  Textiles are your friend.

Framed Wallpaper Sections

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 9.58.24 PMElements of Style

If you don’t have the $$ to buy a full wall of paper, just add a little statement by framing a pretty section of Chinois wallpaper.  Erin from Elements of Style has done this expertly in her bedroom.  You still get that feminine feeling for a fraction of the cost.

Jars, Vases, Canisters, etc.

Probably the simplest and most accessible way to add Chinoiserie vibes to your space is with ceramics.  Create a grouping for a collected-over-time look, or just accent with one piece — the effect is classic and beautiful, even to a modern space!

Weekend Citrus Pickin’

This past weekend, Grey and I took a little drive East to The Farm at Agritopia for some citrus-pickin’.  It was our first time there, though we have had several awesome meals at Joe’s Farm Grill (right next door).  I actually follow The Farm on Twitter and happened to see a Tweet from them a few days prior about the U-Pick Event they had going on.  So happy that I did!

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 9.47.37 PM

This is one of the coolest yet simplest things I have ever done in our Valley of the Sun. Upon entering a small, unassuming gate, we were greeted by what looked like farmers themselves.  We paid $10 for two 5 pound bags that we could fill up with whatever combination of citrus we wanted.  The two guys gave us a map of the farm so that we would know what we were picking.  And then it was off into the maze of trees!

The ground you see above is covered just like that, all around.  Definite tennis-shoe or boot-wearin’ terrain.  There were different types of oranges (we picked Blood and Arizona Sweet), grapefruits (Ruby Blush — favorite!), and lemons, oh the lemons — amazing.  I have been drinking mug after mug of hot water with a wedge of these ultra-juicy and slightly sweet lemons squeezed in…heaven.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 9.48.22 PM

After we filled up our bags, we popped over to see the ducks and the chickens, who were grazing and sun-bathing.  Then it was off to The Coffee Shop, which is literally a one minute walk away, where we had the best lattes in the history of lattes.

Great for families, and great for a date!  I kept thinking that this would be the perfect first date idea — teamwork required for following the map, picking items to share, and then lunch or coffee is on-site.

Easter Flowers

Can you believe Easter is this month?  It’s so early this year!  I’ve got a few Easter posts in store for you, and we’ll kick off the little series today with some flower inspiration.

Flowers are your easiest and most accessible decorating tool.  They’re in your yard, or the furthest away they’ll be is the grocery store.  I think flowers are my favorite way to invoke a little spring happiness in my space.  When I was going to design school, my instructor told us her main rule about flowers:

“Trust the flowers to be beautiful.”

What she meant by this was to just throw ’em in a vase and be done with them.  They’re already beautiful.

I think on any given day I would have to agree with her — this is sort of the motto I’ve adopted.  But for a special occasion, it’s nice to do a little something extra.

Use what you have on-hand to make your flower arrangement unique.  Candy, veggies, eggs — those are all good things to use as a springboard.
