Summer Decorating

As Summer slowly but surely comes to an end (slower for us in the Southwest!), I thought I would create a few posts in the next couple of weeks to showcase the Summer decor around the house.  My mother-in-law keeps a variety of decorating supplies on-hand for this time of year — including lots of shells, sand, and some fun sea glass!

This is in the foyer — I loved this big shell and placed it on a stack of fanned books.

Here’s a little arrangement on the bar — sea glass and a starfish in an antique silver bowl.

Bootleggers

Greyson and I went out for dinner last night at a place that he has been telling me about for a few weeks now.  The interior design was so cute and the food was great, so I thought I would share!

This is the view of the place when you walk in.  The restaurant is dimly lit and has sort of a luxe speak-easy vibe.  If there has never been such a thing, there is now!

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.57.38 AM

I love those bright orange Tolix chairs and the tables are like a galvanized metal.  The addition of the tufted benches and booths add in the classic design element that keeps the space from seeming too stark and industrial.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.58.12 AM

The bar is pretty rustic, and the stools there are in the same Tolix style as the chairs.  Greyson said that the bartender told him that they used a lot of reclaimed wood in the design.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.58.47 AM

There’s an area in the back of the restaurant with high-tops and TVs.  Still super cute, and I love that it’s not your typical sterile sports bar — a non-sports fanatic could still enjoy him/herself here, even in this designated area!

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.59.19 AM

And how cool are these mason jar chandeliers!  I have no idea if these were DIY projects or not, but there are two of them and they are outfitted with Edison bulbs which adds a little bit of extra interest.

I can’t write a post about this restaurant without mentioning the food, which was great.  I had the Beet Salad with turkey and a side of Mac and Cheese, which was, OMG, awesome.  Highly recommend for all you Phoenix/Scottsdale peeps who want a good place to eat with design pretty much anyone can appreciate.

Modern Cabin Style

Hey there!

I hope this finds you all well and enjoying your Summer.  It’s been a while since I have popped onto this blog, and I’ve been missing it.  Grey and I are still saving for a house, but we are making huge progress and it feels amazing.  We’ll have our own home before we know it!

This time of year, I always think a lot about childhood Summers, and time that my family and I used to spend at a particular cabin.  I loved the style of it — your standard lake-house cabin, but I think the more modern cabin styles are also super cool and unique.  I thought we could focus on some inspiration pertaining to that today!

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.48.55 AMHome Adore

What’s lacking in privacy is made up for in beauty with this design.  I love how the perimeter of the home is pretty typical as far as any cabin goes — but it’s the simple yet expansive wall of windows on the back that creates that contemporary vibe.

Awesome rustic raw wood on this house.  It’s like it has been in this same spot for years, weathering with the ages.

How cute is this?  I love all of the angles, and the contrast with that black door on the side.  It’s nice that it is not centered on the front — creating a level of funkiness.  Notice all of those straight lines (paneling, stairs, etc.) sort of offset by the angles.  That is great design!

I think I could do an excellent job vacationing in this house.  🙂  Seriously stunning.

How fun are these?  A family compound of what ‘they’ call “micro-cabins!”  I could picture this being really fun.

Here I Am

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.43.48 AM

So, there are basically five people I know who read this blog (hi, mom!), but for those five people, here I am.  I don’t write that as a cut to myself, but more to say that I am finally at a point in my life where I can have this little space of the internet and revisit it from time to time; but I am not, under any circumstances, under the impression that this corner of my life, this piece of my life, and how successful it is or is not defines me as a person.

There have been some changes in my life since I last wrote.  I left a job that made me incredibly, terribly unhappy; and I have now found myself at a new company, doing something I love, with people I enjoy, and that has made a huge difference.  I used to wake up essentially dreading the day.  Would I disappoint someone?  Would I disappoint myself?  Would I ever be able to feel like what I am doing matters?

These questions plagued me.  They had a remarkable impact on the way every day would go for me, on how I felt when I woke up in the morning.  And really, the only thing that I could think to do on a daily basis, on a nightly basis, on a minute-to-minute basis, was turn toward my faith and realize that whatever I was going through, God was trying to teach me something.  And so I prayed over and over and over again, and slowly but surely I felt things shift.  And then I saw things shift.  And just as quickly as things went bad, they turned around for me.

Thus, being so busy with my new endeavor, this has left little to no time for blogging.  I still am relatively active on Twitter since that is where I get a good amount of day-to-day design inspiration.  But the blog has seemingly gone by the wayside.  There was a time when this would happen, and I would suddenly get the blogging itch again, and I would feel the need for a whole new blog, a whole new theme, a whole new adventure.  But this one is different.  I feel like I will continue to update when I am inspired, or when I have something to say, or when time allows.  But in the meantime, the pressure is off.

I want to surround myself with my life, with my happiness.  This truly content feeling is new to me considering how the last six or seven months have gone.  And so, if I see something that compels me to write, or if I have some time to check in, etc., I will do so.  I will think of this space as more of a journal that I keep for myself than for anyone else.  I just have to think of it this way.

So, here I am, latching onto life again and beginning a new journey.  Come along.

Fashion Friday: Classic Stripes

Stripes are one of my favorite neutrals — both in fashion and interior design.  Over the course of the last three years or so, I have acquired a pretty substantial amount of striped items of clothing, but I have found that I can never have too many pieces!  A striped top in my closet is just as essential as a black top — and because of this, when paring down my wardrobe, all the striped items always stay.  To me, they rank among my topmost essentials!

Have a great weekend!

Mixing Patterns

One of the things that I had some trouble getting the hang of in design school was pattern mixing.  I remember being in a Kravet showroom, hugging a handful of samples for a color board, and laying them out for one of my instructors who looked at me and said, “Honey, these just don’t work.”  She explained to me all about dominant, subordinate, and neutral fabrics, and I just felt so overwhelmed.  Like, why can’t these go together?  Panic ensued.  How did I even have a future as a designer if I couldn’t tell that a large quatrefoil geometric pattern didn’t work well with a floral?

I got better at this, although I think this is something that I still have yet to master.  As a designer, there is a “feeling” you get in your gut when you get it right, though.  For anyone who is a designer of any capacity, you know what feeling I’m talking about.  We mean it when we say that the way something looks doesn’t “feel” right.  It literally tugs at us, and bothers us, and follows us around all day until we solve the problem that is nonexistent to someone who isn’t both blessed and cursed with an eye for design.  And so, for me personally, there is a lot of trial and error in what I do.  I usually can’t look at a pattern and say — “That will look PERFECT with x.”  Because of that, I save my receipts!  😉

Pattern mixing is tricky…  You don’t want this:

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.20.35 AM

Scary, gaudy, overwhelming

But you also don’t want this:

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.21.36 AM

Almost completely devoid of pattern altogether

What great pattern mixing  accomplishes is a layered palette of textures, colors, and interest that really gives a sense of who lives there and what they like, and sets the tone for the space.  Great pattern mixing tells a story!

Comfort Food

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.13.30 AM

Last night’s dinner — a pretty presentation.

Comfort food is one of my favorite food categories, and last night’s dinner will be earmarked as one of my new favorites.  My mother-in-law cooked, and the meal was cheesy polenta with sauteed greens and two sunny-side up eggs layered on top.  A hot, decadent meal that still packs nutritional value, this was a treat!

If there’s one thing I have learned about food in the last eight or so years, it’s that presentation goes a really long way.  Simple care in how your food is arranged on your plate can elevate even the easiest thing — whether it is putting your bagel on a real plate in lieu of a paper one, or creating meals that you look at and say to yourself, “That’s pretty.”  It’s true what they say — you eat with your eyes first!  I appreciate pretty presentation so much and I try to make an effort with whatever I’m eating to make it appeal to more than just one or two of my senses.

Pretty Kitchen Storage Solutions

Good morning, and happy Monday!  I hope you all had a great weekend and a happy Mother’s Day if you were celebrating.

Today we’re talking pretty kitchen storage solutions (i.e. hutches, buffets, open shelving, etc.).  These solutions can be used in a variety of different ways — to conceal items or to display them; to corral items that will be used and items that will not; and to further the design aesthetic that is trying to be achieved.  Because of the versatility, if you have room for one of these spaces in your kitchen — even a small one — they bring about a really custom and luxurious feel.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.01.55 AMHome Bunch

This china hutch doubles as a coffee station, with the built-in espresso machine.  I have mixed feelings about built-in coffee machines.  But that’s for another post.  🙂  A mix of clear glass and porcelain accessorizes this cabinetry.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.02.54 AM

This is actually my in-laws’ kitchen.  There is a cabinet above the little countertop area for glassware that we use on a daily basis; an armoire of sorts in the corner reserved for pretty items that are just for decoration; and the center cabinet on the left-hand wall stores tons of other serving pieces and pewter that are stacked and nested.

I love the mix of dark and light in this kitchen, and especially all of the pretty storage on the right wall.  Those recessed glass-front cabinets are beautifully done.  I would imagine that the double-door cabinet on that wall is the refrigerator/freezer combo.  Stunning cabinetry there, as well.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.04.34 AMBerry

How about this rustic two-toned kitchen and that amazing glass-front cabinet?  I love the muted, mossy green and that rich chocolate wood.

Open shelving, a couple of cabinets, and transitional finishes create a really unique and open area that was definitely designed custom for the homeowner to enhance the way that they wanted to utilize this space.  And please take a moment to sincerely appreciate that ceiling.  That’s detailed design and architecture at its finest.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.06.53 AMWorkbook

I’m basically a fan of any taupe cabinetry these days, but the paneling and exposed hinges on these is particularly stunning.  Also, the paned glass — really subtle, but without it, it’s just not as good.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 4.07.56 AMVintage House

A nice idea for plates and other serving pieces with a theme, providing an eclectic, collected-over-time look.

And again.

I hope you have a great rest of your Monday!

Fashion Friday: Tulle

When I was little, nothing made me happier than a poofy skirt that I could twirl in.  Twirling was basically my favorite thing, and I was known to wear the skirt from my Belle Halloween costume (that my mother made for me, no less) to the grocery store on a fairly regular basis.  And so, since fashion really is something mainstream, while style is something that each of us own, I personally am constantly drawn to the look of tulle skirts mixed with something more basic…more ordinary.  There’s nothing like that balance, and there’s different ways that this can look — some more Parisian and chic; others leaning more toward an edgy and funky attitude.  I love the versatility, and while I can’t say I own a tulle skirt at this point in my life, these images do inspire me, my sense of style, and the way I look at the clothes I do already own.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Simple Elevations

Good morning.  🙂

When it comes to entertaining, I think the simpler you can make things, the better.  For everyone.  Fussy table settings are not really my cup of tea, and there are plenty of easy things that you can do to elevate a party and to make it feel like, yeah, you put some thought into it, but it’s still effortless; it’s not stuffy, you’re not frazzled, and the prettiness of simplicity really shined.  I have two women in my life who have mastered the art of entertaining beautifully and gracefully — my mom, and my mother-in-law.  When it comes to me, my husband knows that I can get stressed out because I want everything to be freaking perfect, but I feel like with time and experience this will go by the wayside and I will have an easier time entertaining larger and larger groups.  Anyway, here are some simple ideas to make pretty and enjoy.

Love this for a Mother’s Day brunch — rolling up pink paper napkins so that they look like roses, and placing them in a bowl of some kind with some greenery.

This is brilliant.  I have also seen this done with cucumbers.

The thought process is simple here — anytime beverages are served this way, it’s beautiful.  End of story.  These are super easy to find (HomeGoods, Costco, etc., or if you really want to get your fancypants on, places like Horchow).

Make those veggies pretty.  The first image I have shared on the blog before — my mother-in-law opted out of the veggie tray and into the veggie urn.  So pretty.  And the bottom image — a beautiful table centerpiece that could also double as a snack.  Later, though.  After everyone goes home.  Because you might ruin the centerpiece, otherwise.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 3.39.58 AMErdos at Home

And speaking of urns… (I love them)… how about this idea?  Fill with ice and pile in the beverages.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 3.41.04 AM

Also a great idea — freeze fruit on cocktail skewers, then let guests select their favorite and not only will it look pretty, it’ll keep the drink cold for a little longer, too.
