Friday Room Inspiration: Girly Tween Double Bedroom

Happy Friday, friends!  I, for one, am really looking forward to the weekend.  It’s been a whirlwind of a week, that’s for sure.

My little blog has evolved a lot over the years.  In the beginning, I really only posted about interior design inspiration that I found on the internet.  I would pick a theme and post about it — pretty simple.  We lived with my in-laws, I was just starting out in my career (at a rather uninspiring job at that point), and I didn’t have much to share, lol.  But I loved writing, I loved design, and that was my driver.

I started sharing my in-laws’ house a bit after that.  Vignettes I would create, my mom-in-law’s beautiful holiday decorations, table settings…  It’s where I got my creative outlet for sure.  And then we moved into our house!  I’ve shared the whole evolution of our house design on the blog and have especially focused on mostly only original content since the beginning of January.  It’s been fun and I feel proud of the things I’ve created here.  But I’m also itching to bring back some focused interior design posts without compromising my excitement over featuring mostly my own created content.

Mood boards are a great way to hone in on an overall aesthetic for a design plan.  They’re really fun and, in my opinion, it’s important to always start with a collection of ideas — no matter how you create that collection — before you buy anything.  It saves you money in the long-run, and there are a whole bunch of other reasons why I think they are important!  I thought it would be fun to do room inspiration posts on some Fridays for a room concept.  I’m not sure how frequent these posts will be because this one did take kind of a long time to put together, but let’s play it by ear.  😉

I love a well-designed kids’ room.  I have worked on a couple in the last few years and they were so fun to create — and install!  I was inspired by this adorable twin bed from Serena and Lily, and the rest of the bedroom just moved forward from there.

I don’t like everything to be totally match-y in a bedroom, but I do like to have consistent finishes and a color theme.  I like to go with one color of finish for the case goods (nightstands, dressers, desks) and keep that pretty consistent or select colors that play well together; and then I like to have fun with the upholstery and keep that consistent, too.  It doesn’t all have to be one color, but ideally if you have a poppy color, like the pink above, it should float all around the room.  The best ‘formula’ I have for this is to find ways to use that pop of color on a vertical scale (window treatments / paint / wallcoverings), on a horizontal scale (furniture and accessories), and on the floor (i.e. your rug selection).  You don’t have to be too rigid with this, but I think that consistent finishes and colors and good distribution of color will create a really tailored, expensive-looking space.

Friday Room Inspiration: Girly Tween Double Bedroom {Details Blog}

Seriously, people — you cannot have too much.  It’s really all about the texture when it comes to livening up a space.  Especially in kids’ spaces — utilize those baskets!  Serena and Lily have amazing ones (that cost a fortune, but holy gorgeous!) or check HomeGoods.

Friday Room Inspiration: Girly Tween Double Bedroom {Details Blog}

For this room, I really fell in love with that branch etagere.  It’s perfectly feminine and just a really fun statement piece.  Also that pink shell chair on casters is a cute little vintage-inspired throwback accent.  I think every room needs at least one quirky, fun, or whimsical piece in it — large or small.  I also think it’s neat how that etagere could look really formal in another room design but in this one it just looks kind of magical.  🙂  It just goes to show you that so much of design is determined by how you mix and match things.

If you have any questions on where anything is sourced, drop me an e-mail or leave it in the comments below.  I hope you have a great weekend!

Spring As a Feeling

Good morning!  It appears that just as swiftly as the “snow” left our valley, we have been blessed with beautifully warm Spring temperatures.  This has me feeling ready for Spring.  Bring on the peonies, outdoor coffee dates, farmer’s markets, and al fresco dining.

Each season, I like to compile a bunch of inspiration photos together to welcome and celebrate its arrival.  Looking over this Spring’s photo collection, it’s clear to me that I am feeling very drawn to soft, subtle colors in lieu of bold patterns, which is kind of new for me!  There are plenty of photos of very neat, organized cabinetry, shelves, and spaces because, well, this time of year is when I especially crave that order.  I am still trying to purge and organize some small areas of our home and then I will be getting on with my Spring cleaning, which is a process that will take me a few months.  Right into Summer!  Which is when we will officially enter into sloth-mode due to the extreme heat — ha!

If you’re living in a part of the world that is still experiencing a very cold Winter, I hope these photos make you feel warm.  😉  Spring will be here before you know it!

This is what Spring feels like to me…

Pantone Color of the Year 2019: Living Coral

Good morning!  I hope you had a great weekend.  Ours was spent celebrating my brother and his new fiancee.  So excited!  🙂

Each year I post about Pantone’s Color of the Year.  I have to say that in recent years it hasn’t really thrilled me!  But I’m excited about this year’s color — Living Coral.

Pantone Color of the Year 2019: Living Coral {Details Blog}

It’s a fun color, isn’t it?  I like to post about these yearly colors because they show up in design across the board in big ways — interior design, fashion, graphic design…  I’m not one to really add anything trendy on purpose in our house for the sake of trendiness alone, but it’s still fun to take notice of what is happening in the world of color and design.  This color feels so lively to me and is really a happy color in my book.  I’ll never pass up a good coral!  😉

If you’re looking for simple ways to add this color to your space, pillows, accent rugs, accessories, or even a little artwork will do the trick.  No need to fully commit.

Let the celebration of Living Coral begin!  🙂

Pantone 2018 Color of the Year: Ultra Violet

Hey, guys!  Happy Tuesday!  🙂  I hope you’re in the midst of a beautiful and productive week.

I always look forward to blogging about the Pantone Color of the Year.  It’s a little something I wait for in December.  How about you?  I like being introduced to the color, reading up on it, and then looking out for it!  It’s kind of fun bein’ on the hunt.  😉

I have to admit that this year’s color took a little bit of time for me to warm up to it.  It reminded me so much of a cartoon-y purple and I was a little bit disappointed.

Pantone 2018 Color of the Year: Ultra Violet {Details Blog}

In preparation for this post, I read up on it and the energy put forth behind this color is really awesome.  We’re in a time when we need all the positivity we can get!  And the fact that this color is a color of hope and promise?  I kind of love that.

We’re in luck with this color, too — purple goes with everything!  It’s a universal color, lending itself to whatever else you have in a room.

Ultra violet is all about vibrancy.  I think that is what I do really like about it.  It’s not a flat color — it’s dimensional and full of life.  Slightly neon maybe?

It can also be muted, like these chairs.  They’re still punchy, but they’re a little on the subdued side.

Blues look exceptionally pretty with ultra violet, too.  I love the mix of shades of all of the colors in this living space.  It’s simply a blue and purple color palette thrown a bunch of different ways!  Green is the secret BFF of any purple, though.  They’re always buddies.

A little bit of regency, anybody?  A favorite of mine.

Of course, in a large application of ultra violet like this foyer, black and white is a great way to break it up / ground the space.  Black and white’s just good at that.  🙂

I’m sure you’re on the edge of your seat wondering if ultra violet has found its way into fashion and that answer would be yes!  😉  Admittedly, my daily wardrobe borderlines more with faSHUN than fashion, but here’s some fun eye candy…

If you’ve made it this far, whew, thank you!

Will you be using ultra violet somewhere in your home this year?  Pillows and flowers are very non-committal…  Would not suggest the purple carpet.  😉

These comfy elements are things that tell me…  Someone lives here, and loves being warm and cozy, too.  I love stacks of books and extra pillows, and when decor items are pulled out of storage to fill up a space just a little bit more.

Baskets are one of my favorite things to add around the house this time of year.  They provide warmth and lots of texture, and they’re great for holding all sorts of things!  Plants, blankets, books — Kuma even has a big one for all of his toys.  🙂  But that’s a year-round thing.  He likes to have a big toy selection…ha.

This is the time of year for piles of big fluffy towels hot out of the dryer, and caddies for your favorite Fall scents and maybe even a flower or two in a small vase.  It’s also the time of year for brass or copper accents — those warm metals add a lot of coziness to a space.

Do you collect anything?  Now is the time to bring your collections out and gather them together!  I have small collections of a few things, but the main thing that I love to bring out is my collection of silver.  I use it all over the house this time of the year.

Small Bathrooms That Pack a Punch

When it comes to bathrooms, sometimes the smaller they are, the more fun you can have!  Patterned wallpaper, bold lighting, interesting fixtures — these are all things that make a small bathroom punchy.  Get smart with storage, remember that what reflects in the mirror counts, and show off your design sensibilities and personality in these small spaces!

Fall Color Stories

I see color palettes everywhere…  It’s one of the ways that I feel most vibrant and alive, to notice colors and patterns wherever I go.  Fall colors, to me, are warm and cozy, with mustard-y yellows and sweet potato oranges.  I best equate colors with food.  😉  Broadening your color vocabulary is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself — it opens up your imagination in the best possible way.

Next week we’ll be in September… the beginning of the ‘-ber’ months.  I’m so looking forward to this season of nesting in our home.  Last year we were blessed to be in before Christmas but that left us rushing around and our house definitely feels more like ‘home’ this year.  Here’s to the beginning of Fall!  I promise I will ease into it here on the blog for those of you still enjoying the last bits of Summer.

Colorful Abstract Artwork

Good morning, friends!  It’s almost the weekend.  🙂  I am in serious need of a do-over from last weekend so I am looking forward to it.

Today we’re taking a look at the power of abstract artwork in a space.  A large piece can be the perfect punctuation and smaller pieces can work well together, sharing colors or themes, and also lend themselves well to other types of art.  And of course I love a good monochromatic piece of abstract art, but today I’m focusing on those that detail color and life.  I’m in need of some happy hues and vibrancy today.  🙂

Pantry Eye Candy

If there’s one custom design element I love in a home, it’s a kick-ass pantry.  It seems like this is a room that is getting more attention these days during the build process, and I couldn’t be more excited about it.  Out with the super utilitarian design senses and in with creating a space that is both functional and beautiful.  I am all about that!
